which comes first? prestige draws good quality intake or good quality intake produces results and hence prestige? it's a chicken and egg question but in this case it does seem to me poor location has resulted in lowering of standards and possibly standing.

no doubt if we're not born an elite here, chances of becoming elite are quite slim. but if because we cannot be at the top we stop striving, wouldn't we forever remain rock bottom? isn't that worse?
we may be marginalised, the least we could do is reduce that margin of marginalisation. -

or poor dad to invest in him/her.

2) I never knew what Frances Lim said, but she has her point. It is not the complete truth but it definitely is one aspect of it. you can't be a complete wife ignoring husband or family. in any case i don't equate what the female alumnus said with what Frances said. the former is a positive affirmation of the spirit and commaradie she felt from peers while the latter is a belief in a woman's priorities in life.
3) Had that been the real reason then it would've been even more unacceptable. girls perform better because they're better with languages. literature, geography, history ... even biology ... guys are bad with languages ... especially VS guys ... most of us are from chinese speaking families who face difficulties grappling with non-mathematical subjects ... that's why a lot of them bloom only at the 'a' levels or university.

1) Well then, I guess I would say the same for my school - tt's RI btw; well actually it's HC now. What proves the elite quality of the school is not how rich the students are - if tt were so, ACS[I] would be the ONLY elite school - but the rank in the national ranking tables. And unless I'm wrong, I think the ranking of VS was 5 or 6.
2) I believe she said much more than just tt. I mean you get the sense when she starts talking about "wifely duty" and so on...
