Singapore leaders have claimed Singaore initial economic success as attributable to their supposedly extraordinary leadership and talents. To a certain extent up to 1970s, before our leaders obsessed with their talents and leadership, and therefore their own rewards, they have played a part in Singapore initial success.
That success was largely built on a system of taxing the citizens to the fullest through ingenious market fees and charges, direct and indirect taxes through asset corporation, privatization schemes allowing the state to save and stinge on provisions of serviees building up only the state surpluses.
Average household pay between S$500,000 -$800,000 in the form of transportation and housing toll to the state to build state surplus of S$150 billions which the leaders claimed as their success.
Such top-down leadership system is essentially self-centred and egoistic, anti-teamwork and anti-people benefiting only the leaders and their cohorts of elites. After 1970s, the top-down leaders have lost directions with the economy without any more talent with broad-based education or entrepreneurship or fire in the belly in upgrading the economy.
The whole economy was held to ransom by foreigners who obtained all kinds of concessions at the expense of nurturing local entrepreneueship and business vibrancy. That is the main reason why Singapore business conditions are now extremely bad and property market remains slumped as against other regional centres since the last two recessions.
Whereas other Asian tigers continue to prosper due to technological applications and broad-based people-driven vibrancy and entrepreneurship, Singapore economy is still boasting of old-fashion fossilised leadership of a few older leaders. Singapore has been at a cross-road for some years now neither here nor there and unable to upgrade or compete. The local SMEs are at wit's ends and unable to survive due to high costs. The government-favored foreign MNCs are shifting out to other lower-cost centres, China and India.
After such autocratic governance for so many years, it has now fossilised into a rigid counter-productive system which turn off people but the leaders are as to be expected would find it very difficult to admit their mistakes or shortsightedness or acknowledge any other recipes of success.
Hong Kong has been people-driven with a distinct fizz or x-factor due to their peculiar historical circumstance on personal freedoms and entrepreneurship.
Would our leaders ever acknowledge such people factor of success ? Hong Kong has transformed without top-down nannying or government leaders' controls and policies interfering with their lives unlike Singapore where political participants are totally flushed out under all kinds of gerrymandering and electoral manipulations. Even elected president is powerless to do anything to correct top-down autocratic power-play to suit such pompous and self-serving top-down leadership system.
It is too late for Singaporeans now to change as the whole system is too deeply counter-participative and anti-motivation.
How to be like Hong Kong people to make changes to their wrongful policies in order to build a more creative and entrepreneurial society? It cannot be done as the leaders are too proud to admit people factors as key factor of success as demonstrated in transformation of Hong Kong service standard.
Our educated youngers citizens should communicate with one another on thier political rights to do something and to see other factors of success as seen in Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. -

Whatever happens over there.. it is up to the HK and PRC to work out. But HK will not just let China walk over them. So whatever you believe, is your believe. I do not have to agree or believe what you think. Therefore if you wish to think you win this discussion, then so be it.

i guess the whole damned point of disencouraging local entreprenuership in terms of creating cologmerates was to allow a certain family to monopolise the economy and strengthen their grip over the nation. look what they eventually did to people like the shaw family?

China is slowly taking in control. But they are smart not to do it at one go so as to realise how much control is sufficient. Even if China exercise full control, but HK is flourishing. So what's the big deal about more or less control. Never under-estimate China.

We, singaporean do have our pride. Singaporean have pride as a nation, Republic of Singapore; we have pride as a people, Singaporean; We have pride in our society, a multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious society....just to name a few. you are absolutely right! Like one other forumite said, "it is culture, not development." singaporean have to develop our own culture of service. If you are underpaid, overworked, tell your boss, don't show it to the customers!!
If i run my own business, work as a shop keeper for my uncle, it is no use if govenment acknowledge my effort, it is more important what my customers say and what my boss says.
If my competitors employ chinese girl (FT), I don't go complaining to the governement, I employ a thai, cheaper, can small, more polite!! FT problem, not if i were the boss!!
Service culture is not about entrepreneurial or creativity, it is about attitude in dealing with people!! it is certainly not a political issue.
I guess the question to ask is why is it difficult for our people to smile, say welcome, thank you.....is it because we consider jobs in service industry low class job, to be done only by the philippinos, thais and other foreigners?
or we grow up in families where we were too well taken care of and we don't know how to serve?
do addressing our customers "sir, mam" remind us of our colonial past and therefore we avoid it? then how do we address our customers??
Has it to do with our education or our upbringing?
One thing is for sure, do not expect anymore milk from the nanny (she is very old oredi , it is never to late to grow up. -
hello people.
i'm a student, not working part-time, so i dont really have the $$. whenever i go to shops in my jc uniform(when i have the $$ though), the service seems so lackadaisical.
last wed, i went to orchard with my parents to shop. wow. was i amazed by the service that was rendered to me. the smile was crystal clear.
is this because students have small spending power?
i do say "thank you very much" to every salesperson. i hope this would motivate them to increase their svc standards. everyone shud too. start frm the customers, shall we? -

i'll just say where you get good service is when the people have pride in what they do..
it's hard to have pride in what you do when you're paid a pittance, looked down upon, treated like chattel by the bosses, and more...
maybe it isn't the staff that need a shakeup... it's the top.. -

Hanging of national flag IMO does not indicate the pride for our nation. I said it before that displaying pride for nation within singapore is for show to the political party only. I do agree that not all singaporean are proud of their own nation, many of these people cannot make the difference between the nation and the ruling party and for many of these people I don't know they have any pride at all.
