I don't understand why gov is promoting this yellow ribbon thing...It is very correct that ex-prisoners should be given a chance...And very good that such campaign was carried out for public awareness...
BUT gov themselves are doing nothing in their shoes to show the public...
Why gov themselves don't give ex-prisoners a chance by hiring them for work etc...Especially uniformed groups....
Any laws in Singapore states that ex-prisoners cannot join the gov department? Of coz, the worries are always there but gov should prove to us that they can give ex-prisoners a chance, why not the public... -

if ex-offenders think that they come out and turn over a new leave and life will be cosy...think again. We normal law abidding people have difficulty securing a job and have to work fairly hard to get a roof ... are these people living off my tax dollar in prison are gonna come out and think we are Happy land and we forgive their offense plus hand them money freely to sit in a cosy place.
Employers need to give them a chance. So does the govt - I used to work for a certain agency who refused to subcon furniture purchase to a company cause the employees are ex-cons.
However, these ex-offenders must also not think life is easy outside. They need to be counselled and taught about the harsh reality of any normal working person outside. Because some of these people think they are the only ones who are suffering and no one gave them a chance so they do crime to get easy money - ie the world owes them a living. The stupid campaign is not addressing the real issues but is again using some stupid commercial propaganda to push the sale of some meaningless ribbons. -

Courtesy? Where WHERE? Our sales people are not even well mannered on the job. Most people from top to bottom are not courteous ... Some is shown to the rich and the politicians but in reality its not natural or sincere... the common people treat each other like dirt
Speak mandarin was a failure. Now kids need to attend Chinese Tutition classes. Need special means to teach mandarin. Speak English ... don't think its successful but it was forced on us cause all the subjects except for mandarin is taught in english. Even Mandarin has Han Yu Ping Ying to substitude as the English-fied Chinese... But, we are told in Parliment (so important it comes from Parliment) to refrain from using singlish and we must use proper english. I started to think.. Is there a "proper" english out there? I wonder if the Royal Family of England, Queen E would announce to those in Scotland, Ireland, and those not using proper english, those speaking with a slang to refrain and speak proper English like the Brits? Perhaps John Howard in Aussie or Bush in America should tell their people to do so as well. Then how about chinese. Should we all learn BeiJing Chinese and speak like PRC? -

there's no such thing as perfect english. maybe we have london english, manchester english, scottish eng n singapore english all different slang mah
just that singapore is a lil more special

Yeah, Brits can't pass their own English neither can the Americans.
And this kind of thing come out during Parliment ... I think we are all paying too much tax to these people to worry about how Singaporeans speak in their daily lives. Is there nothing better to worry about and plan in Singapore by our "glorious" government than our daily speaking language? The govt is a waste of $
Perhaps someone should ask if it would be ideal to do away with govt ... -

1. Allow ex-convicts to be employed in the civil service and the various GLCs.
2. Allow ex-convicts to run for political office.

I prefer the government to be a clean and corrupt free group so as not to undermine public confidence. I am not very sure about the civil service in other country stance on hiring ex-convicts. My guess is that it should more or less be the same.
Despite having said that, I would still prefer the government to do more to help these ex-convicts beside the on-going yellow ribbon campaign. Perhape the prison service side can do their part by writing referral letters, WDA can also do their part by securing or recommending jobs for them. By the way, I think I read it somewhere whereby the police plan to erase off the criminal record for trival offender. Don't know whether this have been implemented yet. Indeed, this will prove to be a joyous move, to be able to give offender who committed crime at a spite of moment a second chance in life.

ex offender or good record , still have to go thru the interview and selection process.
with so many finding hard to secure or find a job, not to mention have to accomodate foreign talents FIRST.

i believe enterpreneurship should be taught as most can be ther own boss.
there are plenty of vacancies in the typical settings for them or anyone really need a job to survive, like hawkers, hotels, vendors, waiters and wet mkt and even supermkt.
or even they can start their own business.
i am sure no ex offenders or anyone will be turn away.
its those with big head HR policies that are bias against age and record.
next time , have jobs in the casino for everyone, ex offenders or good record. anyone who believe gamble is okay will get the job. -

Take it from another point of view..
The ex-convict probably will feel more assured that society will accept him if there's influence from the top-down..
This may help prevent him from thinking that he doesn't have any chance to compete with society and thus fall back to the dark side easily..
It's a psychological campaign too juz maybe most of us don't see it coz we aren't in their (ex-convicts) shoes.

I can't say all released criminals have turned good, but I do believe they should be given a second chance to most jobs. At least make it a fair ground for them to be selected for interviews. If Singapore wants to become a gracious soceity, public and commercial acceptance of ex-criminals is one important step. -
Heard that ex-con got some special letter on their IC no. anyone can confirm it?? seriously...if mi a boss i will rather employ an ex con than an ex MP
