When I heard this, I was amazed!! What is this?? Modern day Nazism in Singapore condone by the Government???? Are you telling me that the MOM is not aware of the problem??? Or maybe MOM has a scale rating for foreign workers and rank these people as "dirt" not worth protecting while they kowtow and pander to those so-called angmoh "foreign talents"?????It IS a Nazi country, don't you know that?
I want to ask the Perm Sec of MOM and every SIngaporean who thinks he has a conscience: HOW DO YOU FEEL, LIVING IN YOUR SWANKY CONDO WITH ITS BEAUTIFUL SWIMMING POOL AND GYM, WHILE THESE POOR FOREIGN WORKERS WHO TOIL AND SWEAT FACE SUCH INJUSTICES??
I'm trying to find out more about the safe haven run by the volunteer and then go and donate some money or maybe buy some staples for these workers.
Those who really bother to get out of their armchair in this forum, you can call the programme on Channel U also to find out more. Their no. is 65352679.

But before we take such incidents as representative of the plight of all foreign workers here and swipe at singapore for practising nazism, lets get a few fact right,
Watched this programme on Ch U last night called "Scoop Ê®·Ö·Ìõ".
Last night's feature was on the plight of foreign workers stranded in Singapore as a result of the unscrupulousness of local SINGAPOREAN contractors who withhold or fail to pay these poor souls their already meagre salaries.
The programme interviewed this Blangadeshi worker who is now staying at a safe haven run by a volunteer to help foreign workers like him. Wah, I almost cried when I watched him.
According to him, his pay has been withheld for several months and as a result, he can't pay his agent in Bangladesh the couple of thousand dollars he owes as an introducer fee. I heard this high agency fee is partly the result of the high charges imposed by MOM, no doubt to feed the fat pay packages of their Minister and Perm Secs.
His voice breaking and wiping away tears, the Bangladeshi told the interviewer that the agent had been sending thugs to threaten his wife who stays alone. He said he doesn't dare to complain to MOM because he feared that his employer would cancel his work permit and repatriate him without paynig him anything. This is the result of a stupid MOM ruling that says that the employer has the right to cancel the work permit anytime without providing reasons. And guess what? They can do this just by simple clicking of the mouse on the internet!!!!!
Here comes the even more interesting part.
Another worker interviewed said that sometimes, these unscrupulous contractors would hire a few thugs and go to their quarters in the middle of the night and round them up and send them to the airport.
When I heard this, I was amazed!! What is this?? Modern day Nazism in Singapore condone by the Government???? Are you telling me that the MOM is not aware of the problem??? Well, let's get these FEW FACTS right, SGDiehard.Originally posted by sgdiehard:Out of thousands of foreign workers, from many different countries working here in singapore, there is no doubt that some foreign workers encounter difficult situation when they end up not getting what they bargain for. But before we take such incidents as representative of the plight of all foreign workers here and swipe at singapore for practising nazism, lets get a few fact right,
1. the agency or introducer fee he paid was for his agent in his country, and the workers levies charged by MOM are to be paid by his employers here. These are two different things.
2. thugs sent to threaten his wife in his country were no doubt sent by his local agent. It remains his plight no doubt, but that is something his government should take care and not put in singapore account and label us "modern day nazism."
3. many young indonesian ladies ran to their embassy or the singapore police for help when they felt threatened, unfairly or ill treated. Recognising the plight of this bangadlashi, he needs to take courage to fight for himself, like the little indonesian girls.
4. "foreign talents" not only refer to the angmohs, but also the chinese, the indians, the bangadeshi. there are also chinese and indians who come in as foreigner workers and not talents. And we certainly don't kow tow to anybody!!
One more thing, those who built the condos were paid, how much they were paid and if the pays were fair I don't know, but they do not automatically have a share of the condos.
I am glad you get this news from a local TV network, not CNN or BBC; I am glad those unfortunate ones have the courage to speak in front of the TV; I am glad there is a safe heaven in singapore run by volunteers for workers with such unfortunate encounter.
Go and offer your help if you can, money or time. It will be appreciated. And I also believe the government can do more about controlling the unscrupulus local contractors. there are many other social ills, unfair treatments in this society, highlight them if you know so that more people can help, but labelling these as "Modern Day Nazism" is simply stupid!!
the fact that the news came from a local TV network, instead of a foreign network just give the local story greater credibility, doesn't it? How does it tarnish the image of foreign network?? need to protect CNN and BBC?Originally posted by Profounder:Well, let's get these FEW FACTS right, SGDiehard.
1. BEFORE you post, go look into the mirror and say "Thou shalt not flame, if you are not flamed".
Who is flaming here?? calling singapore nazism at work not flaming?? If you want to flame then be prepared for some corrections. Please don't fume, it is no good for your heart.

2. So what if the content comes from BBC or CNN? We know that there are some news agencies or broadcasters that try to peddle a certain agenda, such as Time. But no, that doesn't mean all foreign broadcasters should be tarred with one broad sweep of the brush you are holding.
there were cases of maid getting inhumane treatment and the responsible employers were dealt with, there are also cases where maids not adjusting to the new environment, maids go home, new maids come here, where is your source of "equally many maids here who are being subject to unfair and inhumane treatment"?? equal to what??Originally posted by Profounder:3. Many Indonesian ladies running to their embassies? Case of "eyes wide shut" of a typical Singaporean too de-sensitized by the material comforts he enjoys? For you information, there are equally many maids here who are being subject to unfair and inhumane treatment by SIngaporeans who can't shake off their miser cheapskate immigrant mentality.
I was referring to your statement" while they kowtow and pander to those so-called angmoh "foreign talents"?????" George Bush is not an FT here, and what international politics??? can't tell the diff between domestic and international???Originally posted by Profounder:4. We don't kowtow to anybody? Oh yeah sure. Ask Lee Hsien Loong to tell that to George Bush. Go study on international politics.
My remarks refers to your statment "the Bangladeshi told the interviewer that the agent had been sending thugs to threaten his wife who stays alone. He said he doesn't dare to complain to MOM because he feared that his employer would cancel his work permit" His wife stays in singapore alone??? hmmmm....forgot what you wrote huh??? hope you are not suffering from demantia.Originally posted by Profounder:5. Thugs sent by his local agents? Sorry you don't understand English? Hmmm...Didn't I mention local contractors sending thugs to round up these foreign workers, cancel their work permits and send them back against their legitimate will and entitlements?
You in my dream??Originally posted by Profounder:6. Foreign workers getting a share of condo? Hmm...I must have said that in your dreams. Get the larger picture: many foreign workers come here to toil and sweat and build your swanky condos and roads and rightly their rights should be protected. That is why we are now trying to legislate employment of maids. Likewise they should do the same for foreign construction workers. If we are to call ourselves a civilised nation First World country, we need to afford a little humanity.
Never mind that many Americans illegally don't pay social security for their domestic helps, as they said, 2 wrongs don't make 1 right.
won argue with you on this. withholding pay is certainly a breach of contract. Unless the particular contractor is going bankrupt or do not mind his work permit quota being cancelled, there are ways to sort this out. As for accommodation, is it construction sites, quarters, hostels, what amenities, there are local standards and some are poor but there is much freedom of movement. what is acceptable?? tell me.Originally posted by Profounder:7. End up not what getting what they bargain for? Hell, so you sign a contract to say that you will get $800 per month for 10-hour work each day and the contractor docks your pay for worker levy, puts you in a make-shift dormitory crammed with 15 people and withholds your pay. THAT'S NOT GETTING WHAT YOU BARGAIN FOR?
go and do something concrete for the poor workers, help out in the safe heaven, donate your money, lips service is no use, stupid or smart.Originally posted by Profounder:Who's being stupid here.

speaker corner is the place to discuss and debate on issues concerned singapore, is it not? if you have a different idea, post it; if you don't agree with me, show me why I am wrong; or you are entitled to your idea and shut the fcuk up. people who just start name calling or flaming either have no brain, can't think or total detached from the ground zero singapore reality!!! for that you are no different from the many pap "elites"!!!
Actually, in China, the poor workers when being cheated, really do gang up and kill their employers or gov officers.Originally posted by BadzMaro:i say KILL EM ALL! lol.. if we cant fight the system.. it doesnt mean we can't BLOW UP THE PARLIMENT!

The Singapore media is ranked 130++ in the world and you think it has greater credibility than popular international media like CNN or BBC?
Me thinking like MM Lee? don't know whether to be happy or mad with this kind of comment. I discuss issues based on my understanding on the subject matter. I don't speak for or against pap or oppositions. there is no party stand here. I think I said it before, i am on my side, and if this is not your side, too bad. tell me something I don't know and need to learn if you have a point.Originally posted by iveco:You think too much like MM Lee. For someone who is totally anti-PAP to be compared to them is scandalous indeed.
