Watched this programme on Ch U last night called "Scoop Ê®·Ö�·Ìõ".
Last night's feature was on the plight of foreign workers stranded in Singapore as a result of the unscrupulousness of local SINGAPOREAN contractors who withhold or fail to pay these poor souls their already meagre salaries.
The programme interviewed this Blangadeshi worker who is now staying at a safe haven run by a volunteer to help foreign workers like him. Wah, I almost cried when I watched him.
According to him, his pay has been withheld for several months and as a result, he can't pay his agent in Bangladesh the couple of thousand dollars he owes as an introducer fee. I heard this high agency fee is partly the result of the high charges imposed by MOM, no doubt to feed the fat pay packages of their Minister and Perm Secs.
His voice breaking and wiping away tears, the Bangladeshi told the interviewer that the agent had been sending thugs to threaten his wife who stays alone. He said he doesn't dare to complain to MOM because he feared that his employer would cancel his work permit and repatriate him without paynig him anything. This is the result of a stupid MOM ruling that says that the employer has the right to cancel the work permit anytime without providing reasons. And guess what? They can do this just by simple clicking of the mouse on the internet!!!!!
Here comes the even more interesting part.
Another worker interviewed said that sometimes, these unscrupulous contractors would hire a few thugs and go to their quarters in the middle of the night and round them up and send them to the airport.
When I heard this, I was amazed!! What is this?? Modern day Nazism in Singapore condone by the Government???? Are you telling me that the MOM is not aware of the problem??? Or maybe MOM has a scale rating for foreign workers and rank these people as "dirt" not worth protecting while they kowtow and pander to those so-called angmoh "foreign talents"?????
I want to ask the Perm Sec of MOM and every SIngaporean who thinks he has a conscience: HOW DO YOU FEEL, LIVING IN YOUR SWANKY CONDO WITH ITS BEAUTIFUL SWIMMING POOL AND GYM, WHILE THESE POOR FOREIGN WORKERS WHO TOIL AND SWEAT FACE SUCH INJUSTICES??

2. thugs sent to threaten his wife in his country were no doubt sent by his local agent. It remains his plight no doubt, but that is something his government should take care and not put in singapore account and label us "modern day nazism."
3. many young indonesian ladies ran to their embassy or the singapore police for help when they felt threatened, unfairly or ill treated. Recognising the plight of this bangadlashi, he needs to take courage to fight for himself, like the little indonesian girls.
4. "foreign talents" not only refer to the angmohs, but also the chinese, the indians, the bangadeshi. there are also chinese and indians who come in as foreigner workers and not talents. And we certainly don't kow tow to anybody!!
One more thing, those who built the condos were paid, how much they were paid and if the pays were fair I don't know, but they do not automatically have a share of the condos.
I am glad you get this news from a local TV network, not CNN or BBC; I am glad those unfortunate ones have the courage to speak in front of the TV; I am glad there is a safe heaven in singapore run by volunteers for workers with such unfortunate encounter.
Go and offer your help if you can, money or time. It will be appreciated. And I also believe the government can do more about controlling the unscrupulus local contractors. there are many other social ills, unfair treatments in this society, highlight them if you know so that more people can help, but labelling these as "Modern Day Nazism" is simply stupid!! -

3. Many Indonesian ladies running to their embassies? Case of "eyes wide shut" of a typical Singaporean too de-sensitized by the material comforts he enjoys? For you information, there are equally many maids here who are being subject to unfair and inhumane treatment by SIngaporeans who can't shake off their miser cheapskate immigrant mentality.

Never mind that many Americans illegally don't pay social security for their domestic helps, as they said, 2 wrongs don't make 1 right.
7. End up not what getting what they bargain for? Hell, so you sign a contract to say that you will get $800 per month for 10-hour work each day and the contractor docks your pay for worker levy, puts you in a make-shift dormitory crammed with 15 people and withholds your pay. THAT'S NOT GETTING WHAT YOU BARGAIN FOR?

Unless the particular contractor is going bankrupt or do not mind his work permit quota being cancelled, there are ways to sort this out. Anyway, if you have worked with foreign workers, you will know some important traits.
1. Chinese National workers:
They are a calculative bunch, pick up skills fast and willing to slob plenty of OT so long as they are paid for it. Rude, sometimes nasty and unfriendly, takes quite a bit to earn their respect.
2. Indian / Banglas
They always shake their heads, whether yes or no, can't make decisions, always CHANGE their minds, tend to slow down their work around 3pm in the afternoon just 2h before knock off time, pick up skills at an alarmingly slow rate and are usually unreliable: quality and independence-wise.
It's obvious the show was meant to highlight the plight of foreign workers in SG. And they're probably right. But the stories from these banglas are probably hyped up, especially when they have nothing more to lose.
There's probably such devious contractors around unafraid to make a quick buck at the expense of poorer people whom they bully without any kind of repercussions. But it's probably a minority.
Well, maybe MOM should sit up and take notice after this episode. Or they may just do....nothing. -

I had thought from the way our ministers advise Singaporeans (unless advice only for show) not to criticise their favored foreign workers, they are caring for humanity wherever they come from !!! How to believe them now? -

How does the fact that a story comes from a local new network give it greater credibility??? I didn't know the propensity to sensationalise can be judged by nationality of the journalist or broadcaster... That's something new!

Nazism means one race supremacy over the rest, as the aryan race, or the germanic race was claimed to be supreme over the rest. This situation here is about some employers "exploilting" "ill treating" "cheating" "neglecting" some foreign workers and the "inactive" "condoning" "noncaring" attitude of the relevant authority. It is just a matter of time this happens in Singapore.
Also, consider who is physically stronger? Singaporean thugs or construction workers who work 10 hours straight a day? Once these workers realise that they can actually win in a fight against the thugs, their bully bosses better watch out. -

I totally cannot agree with this man. The Singapore media is ranked 130++ in the world and you think it has greater credibility than popular international media like CNN or BBC?
You gotta know the difference between PROFESSIONAL foreign media and foreign TABLOIDS. The TABLOIDS are the ones that speculate a lot. PROFESSIONAL foreign media like CNN and BBC would never put their credibility and reputation on the line by releasing inaccurate news deliberately.
I assume you rely too much on local news, and thats why you only get information on what they want you to hear? -

Let me rephrase, from your post here, you are no different from many in singapore, including those from young PAP, who are detached from the reality of life!!! have you ever spoken to any foreign workers or their employers, have you any friends who are contractors employing foreign workers, have you ever visited one of those foreign workers quarters and do you have anything to say looking at both sides of the stories on this workers employers relationship??? talking about one sided.
it is sad if you do belong to any opposition parties, they need people with substance and materials to speak for them, not just people standing next to them. the oppositions in singapore are building up their reputation and credibility, look at the mirror first before you think you are one of them.
