if you pursue further, you will truely be wasting your time, and their time.Originally posted by jeg:These companies should just state in their ad that they are looking for chinese and chinese speaking only.
So people like me wouldnt be wasting our time calling up these companies only to get dissapointed in the end.
Thanks for the advice...Originally posted by sgdiehard:if you pursue further, you will truely be wasting your time, and their time.

I agree, although I am Chinese myself. In fact, employers cannot employ only Chinese speaking persons when the job does not require it. It is fair enough to insist of Chinese speaking staff if you are employing a tutor in Mandarin...that's logical, but if you looking for a driver or someone to pack your things, what does it matter as long as both of you speak English?Originally posted by jeg:Understanding ? Then whats the law for ?![]()
Finally someone who sees the discrimination.....Originally posted by oxford mushroom:I agree, although I am Chinese myself. They certainly CANNOT only employ persons of a particular race...I would make a police report and write to the Straits Times.
Such employers must be taken to task.
Not just that.....I am positively ashamed of fellow Chinese who practise racial discrimination. These racists have forgotten the days when signs outside clubs and restaurants read, "No dogs or Chinese allowed".Originally posted by jeg:Finally someone who sees the discrimination.....![]()
But in this case, you can clearly see that the company wants a chinese instead of a chinese speaking person. I dont see why you really need a chinese speaking person for shifting and troubleshooting computers for 1-2 weeks.....Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:This topic is really subjective.
I don't really think it's discrimination
Nowadays business requires dealing with chinese business clients.
Same with any foreign firms , foreign firms require people to work in foreign countries.
If you are going to work in middle east , of course the pre-requisite would be to speak Arab.
If you are going to work in a firm in India , you would be required to speak Tamil.
If you are going to work in a firm in Malaysia , you would also be required to speak Malay.
It could be subtle discrimination , then again , hiring people of the chinese race only , could be discrimination , but hiring people who can also speak chinese to me , is not discrimination.
Companies always have the right , to choose the people they want.
For example , if i were to be an employer releasing jobs for potential employees which specialises in dealings with M'sia and Indonesia , of course it will definitely specify Malay/Bahasa Indonesia speakers preferred.
These would be understandable.
Just like a government diplomat , would you choose someone who know nothing about the country he's being sent to , or someone who knows the language, culture of the country.
Who would you pick?
actually although i feel its discrimination its still possible that they are only doing the reasonable thing. for example, the company deals with mainly china pple, they obviously require pple with GOOD chinese and the best way to screen easily and conveniently would be to limit to chinese applicants( that and the reactions the clientiele may have if a foreigner speaking chinese is dealing with them)Originally posted by jeg:But in this case, you can clearly see that the company wants a chinese instead of a chinese speaking person. We all know that IF a company needs chinese/malay/tamil speaking persons for a particular job thats OK. This has been repeated countless times, we all know that.
But many people are turning a blind eye to the fact that SOME if not many companies are using this excuse to specifically employ only the chinese.
Agree. Don't think they want to waste your time, their hands are tied.Originally posted by CryoLind:actually they are looking for chinese only...
NOt that they wanted to be racist (especially when u r gg thru job agencies) but it's the criteria that the HR set. And they can't put out in the ad that they want chinese only, as it is not allowed by law. It is also not allowed to list out you want males or females, so they can only put 'females working environment' n hope that u get the hint. And also not allowed to state the age range oso...
So you hv to b understanding..... not that they r making you waste ur time.
Good luck!![]()

Maybe you could do it again and this time record it in MP3.Originally posted by jeg:Lets all discuss about the "Chinese Speaking only" line that we non chinese speaking people get almost whenever we are applying for a part time job or watever.
Take a look at this job ad.
Ref. no: 871190

So i call the number given.
This lady picks up and i tell her i saw the ad and she asks "What is your name" so i go about telling her my name" and then she says "Oh sorry, we are looking for chinese speaking only"
Not knowing what to do i say "ok nevermind" and put down the phone.
Later on i tell my friend about my experience and he decides to call them. Here's what happened next....
My friend calls them...
Ring Ring...
Man from company: Hello...
My Friend: Hello i saw your ad about the job.
Man from company: What is your name ?
My Friend: David Kusnadi
Man from company:Im looking for chinese speaking only.
My Friend: I can speak chinese
Man from company: Oh sorry but we already have a list of workers.
