If I am not wrong, he posted something about the Swiss system of referendum regatrding important policies in his "Definition of True Democracy" thread. It's a long thread, though. The issue of hanging ultimately must boil down to more than conscience. We as human beings are guilty of many sins if we have to look at it in pure simplistic terms. However society or the world in general has found convenient excuses to "forget" or internalise some, making them acceptable.

3) I wonder why soldiers involved in a war suffer post-war trauma after that...
And yes, the Crusades are considered to be a very violent and bloody time. Think of why there was such a thing as Jihad...
4) What has been deemed "acceptable" doesn't make it any less harmful. For eg, if incest is considered acceptable, it won't change the high probability of children from incestous relationships possessing genetic defects.
