SINGAPORE — A growing shortage of engineers and other skilled workers could stunt the growth engine in Asia-Pacific, especially in Singapore, according to executives at a panel discussion on Wednesday (September 2

Singapore, one of the major hubs in Asia-Pacific, is a small city-state that already suffers from a lack of resources and labor. Singapore must rely on help from foreign investment and labor to remain competitive against the likes of India, China and other nations.
One panelist said there is a “leak” effect in Asia-Pacific — and Singapore — in which a growing number of engineers change professions and move to more lucrative fields like investment banking.
“Singapore is an incredibly good and straightforward place to do business,” said Andrew Smith, manufacturing director for Shell Eastern Petroleum, during the panel discussion at the Global Entrepolis Singapore conference.
“But set aside that, Singapore has some tough issues,” he said. “Singapore has to reach out to bigger markets. We already face a shortage of [skilled workers].”
Another problem is to find and keep qualified engineers. “The challenge is to get more people to stay in the profession,” he said. “The real worry in Singapore is like what’s happening in the U.S. and U.K.,” he said. -

shortage meh ? How come i know so many graduates that either have no work or kana work in Bank or even open flower shop n shiet.. dang man...

when it was the in thing, the govt raise the quota for students in engineering fac....
then come the trend to be IT hub......then alot of ppl go for IT fac....
engineering fac quota lowered...
then say wanna be business and finance hub....
then wanna be medical sci hub
next is aerospace hub?
so now short of engineers blame who? -
The next big thing will be casino related jobs.
I can imagine the number of "skilled" people dropping engineering, law and medicine to pursue a career in countng chips and dealing cards at the blackjack table. -

Sg gov is always changing her focus in developing high tech industrial.
1970s - early1980: Marine industries
1980s-early 1990: Electronic Industries, HDD industries
1990s: Wafer fabs
2000s: Biotech
When the focus changes, the investment dwindles, the engineers had to look for jobs in other placement. Skill development is not continuous. Moreover, people tends to move to banking sectors or other less stressful but more well paid jobs. Imagine a banker / trader, can easily earn S$1K in one day trading, very easy just look at a few chart and do some simple maths. Engineers had to work over night, burn the weekends. In the end, we get only about S$3K ++ or at most around $4K. I got few younger engineers also part time selling insurances and property outside. Everyday, they seems very engross in their SGX trading, than doing their R&D projects...that is life of an engineer in Sg -
Anyway, gaming industry needs different type of talents. Must be young, handsome/pretty mah. How can old uncle and aunties or spectike boy and gals go to do front dress? Scare away the customer, u know?

there are millions of engineers from India (+ Phil ++) available
for hire at "keep overheads down" prices
and the take-up rate due to our foreign 'waste' talent scheme
is high n will get higher..
go harbourfront bldg, take the lift up n down..
maybe u might pick up some Tamil while u at it -

The problem is many of our young people don't study according to their interests, they follow what the gaberment says, our citizens buy shares also because of what the gaberment says. The gaberment changed mind, the market changed, then all get screwed, find no jobs and lost hard earned CPF money in shares.
We all know gaberment run by ppl in helicopter flying high looking far, and are detached from the ground condition, they make mistakes and they change, we on the ground kalangkabok, if we follow them. NEVER TRUST WHAT THE GABERMENT WHEN IT COMES TO INVESTMENT, EITHER YOUR MONEY OR YOUR FUTURE, THEY MOVE GOAL POLEs ALL THE TIME. -

Engineers earn less than a peanut whereas finance execs earn lotsa peanuts.
Financial suicide to be engineer.
Financial wealth to be a finance exec.
Really silly to heed the exec's call and go be an engineer.

In singapore, it will take an engineer to work very very hard for Fu%^ing donkey years (at least about 20years) to just get rewarded by a TT Durian's Peanut. So many young and inspiring Singaporean decided to switch lah, doing trading of shares / options, or even property / insurance agents can earn the peanut much faster and easier life. Some more got may chio bu in the line as well, can can freebies. As engineers, u are likely to face a lot of "bankalah". Unless u have "special" interest, else u wun want a special "bankalah" treat right
