Lol! wth!Originally posted by KumSioJui:at least under surharto regime everything was stable, people got jobs, can send their kids to school and nobody dared to create any funny business. And FYI smarty boy try to control a population of 200 million rebellous people is not easy and surharto did it for 30+ years. Those 4 governments combined didn't even last 10 years ok.
East Timor is Indonesia's de facto and de jure territory!Originally posted by iveco:Yes, Suharto era did have its plus points. However, he was also responsible for bloodshed in East Timor when his troops occupied the former Portuguese colony for 25 years.
it is as you say, there are crocodiles even when the water is calm but tell me in his 30+year reign why the crocodiles didn't dare to do anything? These religious leaders like basheer and others in indonesia had millions of minions and followers and surharto only had what 100+k troops and your crocodiles didn't even dare sh!t in his presence wth!!Originally posted by vindicated:Lol! wth!
In his era, corruption was aplenty. His chrony and his family benefited from it. That's why the country was riddled with heavy debt during the 1997 financial crisis.
Of course, life seemed alright - "nobody dared to create any funny business". Yeah right!
But don't think there are no crocodiles because the water is calm!!!

Didn't Falintil (or Fretilin) disband when Timor Leste became independent?Originally posted by Salman:Because you have nevre been to East Timor at all.
Why don't you do a google search for falintil?
I think the reason Suharto managed to control Indonesia well during thirty two year in power is because managed the economy fairly well but do not forget the one hing he had the support of the army. People can managed to get job well but in the 1997 economic crisis, people were retrenched n could not gey job easilty, prices of basic goods were increasing. There is a saying that said hungry people is always angry. If he had stayed on in power, it will be the same because the people had already not trusted him already, army leadership is also split. After Suharto stepped down, the economy is in a disaster. The Habibie govt tried to pick up whatever pieces it could, only for eighteen months. The time is too short to do anything positive. Wahid also managed to do something positive by allowing Chinese Indonesian to celebrate Chinese New Year openly for the first time in Indonesia, considering the fact that they are being discrmininated. This encouraged Chinese Indonesian to invest in Indonesia once again. Megawati done little to Indonesia.Originally posted by KumSioJui:it is as you say, there are crocodiles even when the water is calm but tell me in his 30+year reign why the crocodiles didn't dare to do anything? and btw indonesia was already rife with corruption long before he came to power, riddled with heavy debt left over by sukarno and his cronies, in all the decades of surharto's reign and before and even after indonesia has never been debt free.
So what have those 4 so called democratic governments done to improve the debt situation? ... nothing... instead the last 3 were caught bilking the system. my dear boy pls dun be so deluded and 'suaku' to think there is such a thing as a government in the world that doesn't exploit it's own people, all governments in the world take from their peoples for their own self presavation.

Had Suharto wanted to stick to pwoer, he would have been able to do so, I guess he lost the stomach for more violence.

Wahid did try but he kept reshuflling the cabinet and got too many people angry.

Mega is downright corrput and bloody useless.
Megawati done little to Indonesia.
Bambang has a great image. But his job is really tough. If the Isians don't support him, he won't get much done either.
Yudoyono is trying hard to clamp down on corruption, considering that it is a
culture for many year. Look at the Governor of Aceh already put in prison, Banten
governor already stripped of his position. Terrorist like the JI managed to get support is because there r many poor people who r desperate to survive, to get hungry on the street is a terrible thing.
I am for the entry into Afghanistan. It is a much better place than before, when the Taliban ran roughshod over the lives of ordinary Afghanis.Originally posted by iveco:I agree. We should always choose to do what is right instead of what is easy.
However, George Bush gave us no choice back in 2001 when he launched the attack on Afghanistan. If we disagree with his heavy-handedness, we risked being accused of siding the terrorists.
It is in Singapore's interest to see Bambang secure and stable as the President of Indonesia.Originally posted by Salman:Bambang has a great image. But his job is really tough. If the Isians don't support him, he won't get much done either.
Its actually a no brain teaser to see the reason why the rest of Indonesia is at the criminally low level of povertyOriginally posted by LazerLordz:Why Bali will continue to be a target

Reason 3
The last reason Indonesian terrorists hate Bali is that it is a resounding success story. Jealousy is central to much of the moaning done by radical clerics and they hate the fact that Bali is thriving whilst much of Indonesia has criminal levels of poverty. And perhaps the main reason Bali is targeted at all is the cause of Bali’s wealth – Western tourists.
