WHile Buddha may achieve nirvana, Buddhists never consider him god, or some sort of powerful being or creator. Mayhap the Buddhists from the Buddhism forum can enlighten you on this.
Secondly, as part of the academia myself, i rarely used the dictionary. Its a quick useful mean to find the meaning of the word, but it can never give us enough understanding of the word, and not enough examples to fit into other context not covered by the dictionary.

You cant just impose the modern concept of separation of church and state onto Tibet. Naturally, as a Tibetan, he would be concerned that his people would be free. We all know how barbaric and idiotic the Commies can be.
It isn't right to comparing the Church with Dalai Lama. In the Dalai Lama case, he advocates a struggle to free his people. The Church doesn't.
My point is, he is mixing politic with religion. And how is doing it? By courting those countries that are not on so friendly term with China or that have ulterior motives on China and synergy with them. This can be a dangerous cocktail if it is not handled properly. From a religious point, I have no comment. But from a political point, he seems shrewd bordering cunningness. Imagine a shrewd or cunning 'Pop' or 'Imam' or whatwever, you got my point? Instead of furthering his cause this way, it seems from all these past years that it has actually weaken it.

I respect all Buddhists and have no hatred for Dalai Lama. I have read a few of his books. I respect him for being an intellect and great religious leader. His struggled to free his people is touching and moving. But years of persisting in his methods that can't bearing fruit? -

Cant help but to say, politically, he is allright. One thing is that, and if you ask majority of the people in speakers corner, the commies should have never existed. There is no reason for them to gain the reins of leadership in China... -

You are right. I believe that one of the Qing Emperors, I believe it is Qian Long who actually ordered military intervention into Tibet to re-establish the Dalai Lama's dominon over the state. The Qing Emperors were devout Buddhist, as such they recongnise the Dalai Lama as a central figure in Buddhism and also the head of the Tibetian State. I guess the situation is as present with the 1949 revolution, which saw the communists come to power. I'm not too sure upon how Tibet became part of China from here. But one thing is clear that one reason why China so firmly wants to reaffirm it's soverignty over Tibet is due to India's support for the Dalai Lama. India's relations with China has been anything but rosey, having fought two border wars with China in the 60s over a disputed segment of the border. Another important reason is the unity and survival of China itself, with many in the party leadership believing that if one of the non-han states breaks away from China, the other states will follow suit. We are talking of a huge chunk of land here, Tibet, Xinjiang, Guizhou, Inner Mongolia, Helongjiang,etc. One of my Chinese teachers, I guess that was the only thing I actually remembered, told us that in order to ensure that this would not happen, the Chinese government has been praticing a policy of resettlement, where Han Chinese are encouraged to settle in these lands dominated by the minority groups. As such, this policy will tilt the population balance in favour of the Han Chinese and ensure that these states stay under the Chinese umbrella. -
