NO NO NO. I'm not gonna tak about the work force. Yes. The birth rate is declining. Singapore's first birth policy since independence was to increase it's population and stuff like that Then after many years came the stop at two scheme whereby families are told try to give birth to only two.
Today, the main reason why the birth rate is decreasing is because people i 'made' to work. 'MADE'. because in singapore, one needs lots of certs and stuff to get a job. A uni grad. may only be a person at the reception. That's the present day truth. That's why few are settling down to have babies -

They should make more options available for NSFs, such as deploying them at Changi Prison Hospital. I'd rather tend to the criminally insane than go for field training.

i feel that the singapore ns is the best there is. nth to complain about. if u still feel that u are suffering and cannot take it means u cannot make it... ns is a must for all singaporean males. i am a singaporean and i must defend my homeland. it is just that simple

You must be joking if you think people are going to voluteer for NS if it is not compulsory. Who the hell would do that, other than a few? Unless you give a HUGE perk (so huge it will be impossible to give) no one is going to volunteer. If we make NS non-compulsory, our SAF is going to lose more than half of our men. And when that happens, Malaysia is going to invade us.

Am all for the idea of National Service. I wanna serve my country with my sweat and blood.If placed in a command position,it is my greatest honour to lead men o the battlefield and if serving as a trooper,it is my honour to fight for my country.

so little man in S'pore. if do away with NS den it'll be worst! and have you think how many man nowadays would want to serve S'pore in the ARMY for their whole life? most S'poreans would probably hoping to work in air-conditioned office and relax etc. so, having NS is still a good thing.

Let's face it.... no one wants to do NS, but someone has to do it. If you make NS optional, who the heck would want to do it?
It sucks to have to give up two of the best years of your life to serve your nation. You have to put your dreams and aspirations on hold. You have to do something you really don't want to do. You have to risk your life and limb for ungrateful people who judge you by your crew-cut and the stench of your No.4.
However, if you don't do it, who will?
In times of war, who is going to fight for this land you were born in? Who is going to stand up and fight our enemies who may kill your family, friends and everyone and everything you ever cared for? The answer: YOU.

Just a point of note,there are still numerous countries implementing mandatory military service,even in so-called 'democratic' Western Europe,Finland,Germany,Austria,Switzerland,Norway,Denmark,Sweden to name a few,though it seems that Singapore has a rather long service period as compared to other countries.

But these countries you listed have more choices available for conscripts. THey either choose the shorter option of military service, or serve in the rescue services for a longer time (sometimes called "civil service"). A German exchange student I met last year spent his conscript days at the A&E department of a local hospital.
