Is unemployment rate really going down ?

Hi,
it is reported in newspaper that the umemployment rate is going down. I am really taking it with a pinch of salt. After graduating from NUS with a MS.c degree, I have been through more than 20 interviews since May 05 and is still jobless now. I think it is a case of "too little porridge to feed the monks" (a direct translation of a chinese idioms) right here in the job mkt situation in Singapore.
Anyone got his/her opinions to share? -

I practising sweeping floor, mobing windows everyday, you know? So...in time to come when the gov set up a school for cleaners to upgrade on our skill...then I can score points and get distinction mah...

If you speak to some management level people in the private manufacturing sector, they will tell you that there is not much manufacturing going on right now in Singapore (That is what I heard at least).
If that is the case, I wonder why governement is still advocating pple to study Engineering. Maybe government wants more R&D Engineers and that would mean Masters or even PHD levels.
For the normal Bachelor degree Engineering degree holders who intends to join the manufacturing industry, the future looks bleak in my opinion. -
it is true.
retrenchments are still prevalent in the manufacturing sector, though not publicized. investments in these area are moving high end. -
the unemployment statistic is accurate... it's just what kind of unemployment they are measuring. there are few kinds of unemployment...for this stats right, as long as u have a job, be it part time or not... it's considered u are employed. so as more and more highly educated ppl started to taking up part time jobs or contract jobs, the unemployment goes down.. but it does not accurately depict that a MSC degree holder is working in a job that fits his education standard.. and if u have simply given up trying to find job, u are no longer part of the unemployment statistics... so if more jobless ppl give up finding job, then these ppl will not be considered unemployment... there are certain criteria for this stats one.
that's why i never believe in stats... there's this saying that says there are 3 things u cannot believe, lies, statistics and lies. im always skeptical when someone esp those salesman or mlm ppl show off statistics... coz i know even if it's collected properly, there are loopholes and inaccuracies in the stats -

Statistics are just figures.
They are, more often than not, moulded to suit the objectives of the publisher. If the govt wishes to raise morale, they need only publish true figures extracted from reliable sources but use favourable indicators to demonstrate low unemployment.
It's just playing around with the numbers. -

All in all, I feel that the future of Singapore looks bleak. With more and more pple relocating overseas, Singapore could be facing a problem of out flow of talents. But who can blame us when there is not enough jobs locally for us.
Another problem I think Singapore could be facing is Defence. With more and more pple relocating, where to find enough pple to do reservist.
