most of the taxi drivers i come across worry if they could make that $90 just to cover rental for the day. whether they are sick or need to take time off to take care of family, they still have to pay that $90. so who ended up taking those risks?
besides, tell me what's so different in safety or service standards between privately owned yellow top cabs and your so called corporatised cab companies?
NTUC does not belong to the govt. You don't even know what you are talking about.
so NTUC belongs to? you sure you know what you're asking?
What? Where? When? How? Who?
Please be specific.

Isn't it the same if they are private?

A lot. Corporates will monitor safety habits, maintenace and service standards, who will do that fdor the privates.

NTUC is not part of govt. Are we talking about GLCs?

You see, you cannot come up with specifics.

You don't seem to understand how the taxi rental works...cab drivers are not allowed to own their cabs, they have to hire them for an entire period. If they are sick and cannot work, they still have to pay the rental for the day. They cannot return the cab to the company for a week because they have to undergo an operation or need to rest after a nasty bout of flu.Originally posted by Salman:Isn't it the same if they are private?

no, not at all. how much does it cost to put a cab on the road? $50,000? how much is $90 everyday for 10 years? $300,000? if the taxi driver can own his own cab, he would have $250,000 buffer to afford a day or two or rest. now this $250,000 goes to the cab company and all he is left with is to slave everyday to pay fat salaries to ang moh executives.

despite all these monitoring, what tangible, let alone a lot of, difference exist between individual owned and company owned cabs? furthermore, the public can and do complain about taxi driver standards so the corporate monitoring is more likely than not superfluous if not superficial.

what is the first word of the three lettered acronym GLC? so is Lim Boon Heng part of NTUC or part of govt?
