AIRCRAFT CARRIER! i don't think so, coz its not needed in our region and present situation. This sum of money is not worth spending and i hope the government won't overdo it by purchasing Aircraft Carrier, where the hell are we gonna find pilots to fly the jets there when we already have so many planes on land bases. The latest i know is the development of the Terrex AIFV and the LWSPH 155mm Howitzer. This is shown in the latest pioneer. However, plans of building a new light tank or MBT have never been talked about. Maybe they are planning it secretly?!? Who Knoes? Who can be trusted, the ans is NO ONE! not even your friends and everyone around you. Lets take TOM CLANCY'S books for example, the book" EVERY MAN IS A TIGER" reveals many thigs, maybe some are not top classified secrets, but GEN Chuck Horner (ret) did talked about it.Many other books also the same. anybody reading the book i mentioned? I don't thing Singapore needs an aircraft carrier. Carriers are for those "Super powers" who have to look after interests elsewhere in the globe. Singapore usually prefers to mind its own business. Even if we have interests elsewhere, we'll just send our C-130s and ferry them out. LOL.
I do think that Singapore is gonna purchase somemore SAM systems. Probably like S-300s. Long ranged bastards that can shoot all the way into Johor or KL if necessary. Lolz. -

But lets talk about the Aircraft carrier... i think a CV would be useful to singapore.
1. it frees up an air force base, releasing huge pieces of land for development, housing, recreation(no more golf course) and other uses.
2. a mobile airbase (that is a carrier) is less vulnerable to arty shells since it is harder to hit a runway that can move around.
3. malaysia is getting more longer range arty and MRLS, our airbase and spare runways would effectively be within their range, our airforce may be impressive... but if we cant get the boys up into the air....
4. a carrier can be use to support air strike far north into malaysia since malaysia is literary surrounded by water, actually the SEA is full of water..
5. a carrier would add to the overall deterrence value of SAF.
6. Carriers can... disappear (hide from enemy view) in times of crisis by moving into the international seas and oceans, while still able to launch strike mission at our enemy.
7. a carrier can extend (power project) singapore protection of its SLOC all the way to .. whereever u want.
8. a carrier can be use as backup runway for RSAF planes which cannot land because the ground runway is in bad shape.
9. a carrier can be used as a command ship for amphibious operation and providing air cover for the amphibious forces without the need to have RSAF fly long distance to cover the amphibious units all the way from singapore.
and there are many more benefits of a carrier.
the sad part is that... a carrier cannot stand alone and u need a huge fleet to protect it.
secondly... a carrier if sunk... remain sunk. a ground runway damaged, can still be repaired.
thirdly.... a carrier would no doubt invites huge big giant alien looking barbaric mouth frothing, red eyed jeolousy and outrage from the 'superior race' up north. -
You said it... an aircraft carrier CAN be sunk. Considering almost all the neighbouring countries operate long range anti-ship missiles, there will be more concerns defending another EXTRA asset.

Singapore does not exactly have a sy1 system to protect naval forces from long range missiles. Whereas, arty shells and bombardment can be repaired cheaply and quickly... a carrier once hits taken, might sink and require extensive and expensive repairs... rendering incapable of opertaions for months possibly.

Aya dun be crazy la people, even if Singapore want she also cannot afford... get one also become like Thailand's Chakra-something.... a pathetic waste of metal because they cannot take the operating costs(its huge, the initial cost of the aircraft carrier is just the tip of the iceberg)... besides, the RSN also don't have so many sailors to operate the ship(look at how much they reduced the crew requirements for our LaFayette frigates)....
But there's one thing that deeply concerns me-- the purchase of MLRS systems(the Brazilian ASTROS system) by Malaysia. Should they volley off the missiles at our Runways, our vaunted airforce would be rendered useless in the critical first moments of hte war -
Right! We must have ICBMs to counter them. Think the debt ridden Russians will sell some to us. Beside Singapore is also their hope to have strategic place.

You'd be surprised how quickly runways can be repaired. Some case, almost under 20 mins. Also, with advanced SIGINT, we can tell almost immediately when a Artillery tracking radar comes up, and hopefully before any rockets come up, fighters would be scrambled.

Honestly, I'd feel that an aircraft carrier in Singapore would be a waste of money. Operations, logistics wise, would drain the economy badly. Even if we do have enough carriers, we do not have enough blue water assets to protect it, long rang oilers to refuel it, as well as fighters to fly off it.

OK, since we are at developments in the SAF, I would like to know if anyone has more info on Singapore's upcoming LaFayette Frigates. What are the Combat systems going inside those ships? Last I heard, the
Astor 30 is selected to be the frigate's primary AAW weapon. That's about all i know, cos its so god damned hard to find out about Singapore's capabilities.....
Also, about our Apache choppers... the total order will be 20 in the Lonbow config, right? Anybody know the avionics going into them? (meaning the RWR systems etc, cos Singapore usually likes to rojak the systems so as to get a platform that fully fulfils its needs) -
As long as Singapore can manage and improve and maintain the system, it is good to haf a range of capabilities to suit different needs.

SAF:
1. New light tanks (20+ tons) to replace AMX-13SM1. The light tanks will be able to have add-on armour, transportable by C-130, have stabalised 105mm guns, Autoloader, 3 man crew, Thermal Imager Weapon aimming sight, Commander Independent Thermal Imager CITV, hunter-killer capability and a speed of 70KM on the road.
2. Armoured self-propelled 155mm guns. User the Centurion chassis and foreign turret combined with FH-88 gun.
3. Lepoard 1 A5 MBT (about 30 to 60) to replace the Centurions.
4. Self-propelled air defence system on a wheel chassis.
5. Bionix 25 mm turret armed with Spike Anti-tank missiles... somewhat like M2/M3.
RSAF:
1. 20+ Rafale F3 standard
2. C-130Js, modify all current to J version.
RSN:
1. Helicopter landing ship like the Italian San something class
2. 3 A19 Gotland class subs with Stirling AIP.
3. 6 Meko 100 covettes or 6 Triman stealth ships
4. 4 more minesweepers with Swedish mineswipping equipment. -

Them Leopard A5s are HUGE!! This is Singapore for crying outloud, not Fulda Gap! I'd prefer to have the Israeli M-60Sabra instead. Or maybe even M1A2s. Hehe.
Anyway, I agree with the light tank replacements. The AMX-13SM1s we have now, are nothing but cannon fodder. What I submit for a possible replacement would be a the latest Sheridan light tank. It is armed with a 152mm gun, with almost all the nightfighting gear, CTIV and air transportable. The M8 Buford looks good too.
I'd still prefer 60+ Typhoons over the Rafales. -
Actually Leo 1 A5 is smaller than M60 Sabra. Leo 1 A5 is only a 40 Tons platform whereas M60 A3/Sabra is at leas 55 Tons. M1A2 is even much bigger in the size of Leo2A5/6.Originally posted by Shotgun:Sweet mother of Saddam!!!!!!

Perhaps you were thinking I was talking about Leopard 2 instead of Leopard 1
But if you look at the avionics suite, Rafale is acutally more advanced than the Typhoons. One might one to go with the Typhoons only for the fact that they employ US/NATO weapons (eg. AMRAAM) rather than the French made missiles. Then again, Rafale can be easily adopt AMRAAM/Sidewinders combination too.
I'd still prefer 60+ Typhoons over the Rafales. -
The rafale vs typhoon arguement can go on for ages. BUt my theory is simple, they didnt label the typhoon only being second to the F-22 for nothing.
