If the ruling party needs to bring in their heavyweights to flex their muscles in Potong Pasir, then the situation seems one of desperation.
Sending in a prominent MP to galvanise support seems a lose-lose situation.
If the ruling party does win back PP, then people will lament that our govt had to resort to such measures to defeat a 'helpless old fart'.
If they lose, then it will be sheer embarrassment on the part of the ruling party that they can't even displace a 'helpless old fart'.
Either way, it seems like the ruling party is content to wait it out and allow Chiam to step down undefeated. He has no capable successor after Steve Chia screwed up his own chance. And evidently the ruling party is afraid to gamble on sending in a strong figure to contest with Chiam for fear of losing in the elections. -

actually, someone told an interesting point a long time ago.
the very limited opposition in singapore gives the gov an excuse to say that there is democacy in singapore, that there in oppostion in singapore and we are not a dicatorship. it provides some sort of cover in intenational forums, but of course we know what we really are. -
