Recall the legendary "Monkey King" and "No woman No cry" to perform 3 weeks of PTP for this dude.Originally posted by CoolMyth:What's the name of that US old guy who defaulted to North Korea, then later got brought to Japan?
See, he still ended up doing some time of clerical work.
I'm not saying Mr Tan shall go and cheong sua. I think if he's assigned to some clerical work or something I don't think anyone would complain.

I will jump up and clap hands...Originally posted by TooFree:Melvyn Tan is 45 years old. His father is already 80.
I am pondering how will the public respond, should the state meted out a jail term instead.*sign*
All animals are equal but some are more equal than othersOriginally posted by dragg:papers reported that a 39 yr-old guy was fined and asked to serve 9 months. of course he is not a musician.
why the difference in sentence?
Aggressor:Originally posted by Agressor:Agreed. If we show pride in upholding Nguyen's sentence, I think we should not let M Tan off so lightly.
BTW, I understsnd from my cousin that when he went for overseas studies before his NS, his parents need to have a sum of $30,000 as securities. Just in case he do not come back, this sum will be forfeited. How come for the case of M Tan is only $5000. Special Offer??
All guys should turn up at his concert and throw eggs at him.![]()
Even so, would MDC as it is now have the ability to nurture a top talent with world class tutelage? After all, what goes into grooming a top music talent? Perhaps sustained contact with top instructors / master musicians is necessary?Originally posted by LazerLordz:To be fair to the SAF, sportsmen and musicians get to go SAFSA and MDC these days.Back in the 70s..hardly.If our national players can play for SAFFC/SAFSA, they could just do a simple ability test and attach talented musicians to the Band or even put them in the Singapore Symphonic Orchestra for OJT.
Less wastage of talent, and saves everyone the trouble.Problem is the unwillingness to introduce a more flexible form of national service.Face it, some people are not cut out for military service, but are proportionately better at other aspects.Harness those..we cannot afford to be picky.
? maximum age after which they will not ask someone to serve NS?Originally posted by dragg:papers reported that a 39 yr-old guy was fined and asked to serve 9 months. of course he is not a musician.

An alternative view: Perhaps it wasnt so much a decision to run away from NS as to develop his talent? Is that so unlikely? What if there was no way he could have developed his talent while serving NS here, or if the enforced break while serving NS meant that he could never go back to music at that level. Would that make a difference? Would that not have deprived the world of a top musical talent? Would that have been better, purely because it would have appeased some? After all, parity means equality on both sides. Let's compare like with like. How many others with that top talent or the promise of becoming a top talent are presently serving? or have served?Originally posted by av98m:Come visit Singapore! The only country in the world that:
1. Fines and jails fare cheats
2. Fines and jails music and movie downloaders
3. Fines and jails people who are tricked by illegal immigrants into renting their rooms/flats to them.
And yet,
People who decide to run away from serving their country and contributing to its defence are slapped with a measy $5000 fine while others sacrifice 2 or 2.5 years of their lives! Whooopee! Its very easy to conclude that national service is worth nothing in Singapore. Those of you reading this who have rich parents, might as well buy a house overseas, study there and settle down there. Don't waste 2 years of your life. no one will appreciate it. Certainly not our government, not our stat boards, nor employers in general.
As I am sure you will when the international press splashes the pianist's face across front pages around the world with the leader "Singapore jails top pianist"?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:I will jump up and clap hands...
Let jason and company handle 50 cent. Too many threads on the same topic are bound to be closed and consolidated into the main thread.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Our beloved government has struck a backroom deal with that sod..
The government's National Arts Council has already publicized that he is teaching a Masters class and will be a judege in a music competition in December (http://www.nac.gov.sg/com/com02a.asp?id=36). Also, the Singapore Arts Festival has already listed him as one of the soloist (http://www.singaporeartsfest.com/Programmes2006/).
In other words, he CANNOT be jailed. The government knew it, the court knew it, he knew it.
The court hearing was a sham, on the level of a kangeroo court in a bannana republic. The judge probably had instructions not to jail him although the law provides for imprisonment or a fine or both.
That loser only came back because he knew they will do a show trial and fine him $5000, which is the maximum anyway. He is not at all concerned about that money...if 60k is peanuts, 5k is pi sai...
(I am going to put this in a new thread since that 50cent attack has seen fit to visit us)

Let's all cut the crap and just face the facts that this is how Singapore works. We have always been at the expense of either talent or wealth, be it with empirical evidence or not.
Bluntly put, it pushes people to achieve a high status in life, on the other hand, it diminishes our humanity.
This is our government's policy of putting foreign talents over citizens. The truth is out, citizens has less privilege. No wonder none of my foreign friends wants to be a singapore PR/citizens. Why loose all those privileges? Wanna to be treasured by your own government? Leave the country and return as a foreigner! What a joke!!Originally posted by macjoe:He has set a precedent for more to follow.
Personally, more should do it. Sticking around just becomes a poorly-paid nobody. Stepping out can become a highly-paid somebody valued more by the government.
Brother, wake up your idea. There are only 2 kinds of people who don;t serve NS: The medically unfit and the Chow A Gua. Melvyn belongs to the second. Which one are you?Originally posted by sinicker:can i not go for NS and pay $5000?
