Well, we know all about the uproar that his attempt to serve the music scene here (by judging at the music competition) caused. So much for Singaporeans appreciating his voluntary effort to give back to the community here.Originally posted by pie:I think he should spend some time doing community service besides the fine. Jailing him doesn't really benefit anyone
give back to the community?Originally posted by jeevna:Well, we know all about the uproar that his attempt to serve the music scene here (by judging at the music competition) caused. So much for Singaporeans appreciating his voluntary effort to give back to the community here.
I'd be interested to know whether you can find any reference in publicity material to Melvyn that refers to him only as "British pianist" / "UK citizen". If you track the publicity / reports on him, he appears to be consistently referred to as "Singapore-born". That would be unusual without consistent input from him. So out the window goes your implication that just because he gave up his citizenship he has severed all links with Singapore. Really, your point is no point at all. Why don't you focus on why coming to judge at the music competition was not community service? That might be worth a discussion.Originally posted by dragg:give back to the community?
he gave up his citizenship remember?
A lot of straitjacketed points of view lie ahead of your quest.Good luck.Originally posted by jeevna:I'd be interested to know whether you can find any reference in publicity material to Melvyn that refers to him only as "British pianist" / "UK citizen". sinapore-born only means he is born in singapore. it has no reference to his citizenship. and it is a fact that he has renounced his citizenship. if he loves this country so much he wouldnt have lived overseas for 30 yrs would he?Originally posted by jeevna:I'd be interested to know whether you can find any reference in publicity material to Melvyn that refers to him only as "British pianist" / "UK citizen". why not? There are plenty of Singaporeans and Singapore born persons who live outside of Singapore for long periods of time. Add that to the fact that there was the threat of a jail sentence hanging over his head if he cam back, and it's easy to understand why he didn't. After all, he said so himself. I guess it probably came to a point for him where he thought that he should resolve this outstanding matter. no?Originally posted by dragg:sinapore-born only means he is born in singapore. it has no reference to his citizenship. and it is a fact that he has renounced his citizenship. if he loves this country so much he wouldnt have lived overseas for 30 yrs would he?
i agree there are plenty of singaporeans and singapore-born persons living outside singapore for long period of time, but they are not dodging NS!! and the threat of a jail sentence is hardly a good enough excuse to stay away.Originally posted by jeevna:why not?
