Mr Theophanous' letter does not directly refer to Singapore's multi-billion dollar links with Victoria, nor the growing threats to boycott Singapore-owned companies such as SP AusNet, Optus and Singapore Airlines.
Instead, it tells Mr Kiang that while the issue "is a difficult one for you and your colleagues, I wish to place on record my view and the views of many Victorians who are seeking clemency for this young man for your consideration".
"I would ask that your Government grant clemency and spare this man from the death penalty," the letter says.
"I believe that such a decision would be welcomed by Victorians. I would be happy to discuss this matter directly with you on the telephone."
The letter had the backing of Premier Steve Bracks, and Mr Theophanous said he wrote it out of conscience. But industry figures say Singapore's links with Victoria are significant.
SP AusNet has 100 per cent ownership of Victoria's primary electricity transmission network and the company's current float offer is due to close on December 2 — the same day Nguyen is to be executed.
A Government source said yesterday it was "outrageous that the Singapore Government will be able to announce on December 2 a successful float of their business in Melbourne and a successful hanging of a Melbourne man at the same time".
An SP AusNet spokeswoman declined to comment.
Now this is interesting, whether to see if there is any economic impact on the 2nd Dec....
I think we have no problem in respecting life, but if one life is to harm many lives, we should stop it. Of course, if it is your loved one that is involved, definetely you will try all means to save him or her. The question right now is that Aussie are being too annoying and it has become a political game in Aussie.Originally posted by Weirdo80:You all talk big because the person to hang is not your relative.
If it were your son, brother, sister, father, mother or wife hanging, I think you would all think differently.
To hell with politics. This is life, human life. That is only thing that all of us truly own. If my loved one was put on the death row, I would fight till my last breath to free him/her.
FYI, the quality of life in Australia is better than Singapore. And your "laid-back, bo-chap attitude" people spawn world-class athletes and Nobel prize winners. So stop generalizing the population. I've seen tons of slack buggers and freeloaders in Singapore.
Put your arguments into perspective and stop letting your nationalism skew your thoughts. If Singapore has an archaic law that takes life away, only the people are to blame. You instituted your government and voted for them.
It might create an opportunity for us, we buy it low and when the whole things cool down in a month or so, the prices will go up...Originally posted by sbst275:Obviously they want a boycott, let them be...

So can we see a conspiracy theory here, it is those politician and business people will be profiteering this incident.
Maybe he is an aussie, who does not learn how to respect, that is the way aussie being brought up.Originally posted by sgdiehard:If your son were a drug smuggler, what have you failed as a father?

If you value your life then let it be the glory to your parents, blessings to those around you. Involving in drug only bring shame and harm.
If you live you life in a way that will bring harms to other human beings, it is a blessings to mankind if your life is taken away.
As parents, you give lives to your children, you preserve and add values to their lives by giving them the right education and moral values. If parents have to save their children's lives from punishment by the law, they might as well not give birth to them in the first place.
Yes, Singapore has an archaic law, and if you break it, you face the penalty. And make no mistake, the law applies to locals and foreigners, if you don't like it, don't come.
Learn what is "respect" now, if your parents have not taught you.
Excuse me, John Howard makes a better master than LHL. At least the former can be ousted more easily.Originally posted by Kr0n:Wah really cb lah...
ceecookie: I'd so love to see the file which ISD has on you nowIt's really not like me to say this, but please stop blabbering utter crap. Use your brain to think what Singapore would be like now without the tough laws that have been implemented since our Independence. You'd probably be staying in some hut chasing kampung chickens all day, which of course, in my opinion, is a much better use of your time (than for you to spend it here).
Cheers.
Are you sure JH is better??? Maybe you have forgotten that he did make racist remarks!! At least LHL will never do that...Originally posted by iveco:Excuse me, John Howard makes a better master than LHL. At least the former can be ousted more easily.

Well Said......Originally posted by Gedanken:Guys, guys, guys, let's get a bit of perspective here, shall we?
The Singaporean government's doing its job. The majority of the Singaporean people don't want drugs in the country and support the death penalty as a method of achieving this objective. By upholding the death sentence, the SG government is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
On the other hand, the Australian government also has its job to do, which is protecting the lives and interests of Australians overseas (regardless of their ethnic origins). Which government can afford to be seen to be washing their hands of one of their own citizens who's in trouble overseas?
IMHO the Howard government took its best shot already by suggesting that the death sentence be commuted in exchange for all that Nguyen knows about the drug smuggling ring. That has been the only suggestion so far that goes to achieving Singapore's higher goal, namely the reduction of drug traffic.
On the other hand, if that plan was to be carried out, it also means a death sentence for Nguyen - only it will be a drug ring that kills him, not a government-appointed hangman.
But that's not where the problem lies. The problem lies in everybody else sticking their noses in.
Who's making noise about the Singaporean government treating Australia "with contempt"? The opposition. Who's calling for boycotts and calling the other side names? Private citizens. Who's sensationalising it? The newspapers.
Let's get a grip here, people. What's flying about in the media is nowhere near the entire truth. There are plenty of Aussies who think that Nguyen was very foolish to agree to the gang's demands, and now it's tough luck that his gamble didn't pay off. However, that kind of view just doesn't pay well in terms of newspaper circulation numbers.
Once you filter out the political grandstanding, hyperbole and other forms of crap, what you're left with is two governments in a very difficult position, a gang of drug smugglers who caused all this trouble, and one guy who was either dumb or desperate enough to be the pawn.

Why is it that manslaughter in S'pore doesn't carry death penalty?Isn't manslaughter many times mare evil than trafficking drug?Originally posted by sgdiehard:If your son were a drug smuggler, what have you failed as a father?

trafficking drug is more evil!! It causes harm to many....Originally posted by PRP:Why is it that manslaughter in S'pore doesn't carry death penalty?Isn't manslaughter many times mare evil than trafficking drug?
But our government does not agree to all types of law from ICJ, so law by law is tailored to our own jurisdiction.Originally posted by PRP:Yes,it is right they should bring the matter to ICJ.Isn't our govt alway pride itself as law by law?
Unfortunately, the govt wants to quickly execute Nguyen. So even ICJ rule the govt is wrong, one can't bring back his life.
Why you want to vote out LHL, think for this case, he did his job well.Originally posted by iveco:Can we ever vote LHL out of power at all? At least Howard can be voted out with relative ease.
A reduction in charge from murder to manslaughter is the same everywhere. The case must has its merits for such reduction. One example of such merit can be, an act committed by an accused who had been diagnosed to have an unsoundness of mind at the time the crime was committed.Originally posted by PRP:Why is it that manslaughter in S'pore doesn't carry death penalty?Isn't manslaughter many times mare evil than trafficking drug?
