Reasons for disallowing satellite TV in homes still valid: Lee Boon Yang

SINGAPORE : Singapore has to remain vigilant against terrorism and prevent undesirable content from entering Singapore homes.
Information, Communications and the Arts Minister Dr Lee Boon Yang says this is the reason the government has to disallow satellite television in homes.
He told Parliament the government has reviewed its policy on this over the years and has allowed satellite TV in certain organisations, like banks and some commercial organisations which need time-sensitive information.
More recently, it has also allowed hotels, tertiary and technical institutes, international schools and hospitals to have access to satellite TV for restricted use.
But that is as far as it will go for now. Said Dr Lee, "The reason why we have to prevent the undesirable content from easy entry to the homes of Singaporeans through satellite dishes remains valid and important in the face of increasing security challenges worldwide today. We must remain vigilant against external influences which may seek to split and divide our society."
He added, "The government will continue to review our satellite TV policy and to ensure that our regulations keep pace with technological developments and trends in the entertainment industry." - CNA -

There weren't any terrorism in the 70s and 80s, so what is Lee talking about?
Are terrorist programs broadcast over satellites?
Lets face it, the govt will never allow satellite TVing. -
It's censorship and abusing the right for information.
Who and why has the right to choose what the nation can watch and what not?
Only in totalitarian states the government makes restrictions like this. Where is the freedom of information, democracy??? -

Mr lee boon yang , i know we are dumb and we homeowners are dumb enough and we don't know how to filter out undesirable content from our TV.

This is like ordering everyone to stick their heads into the ground, and not see what's going on around the world.
Come on, Satelite dish or not, with a good TV card and some modding, a PC can receive worldwide broadcasts.
Undesirable contents is available 24/7 via the Internet. Why don't they friggin ban the Internet in Singapore then? Why practice having one foot in and one foot out? As in one foot on each boat?
Ban the internet, and go back to the time when China shut out the rest of the world.
It's so lame! It's like; I wanna work the fields but don't wanna get my hands dirty. DUH!

Yes...Singaporeans are so naive and silly that we cannot be trusted to form our own opinions. We have to rely on the government to sieve out undesirable material..
Btw, did someone just talk about Singapore becoming the regional education and IT hub? O yes, and we are also going to lead the way in innovation and research, under the government's guidance, of course.. -
After spending so much money on our tv station and telecoms providers, after converting them from public to private companies, we need some time to squeeze the consumers mah.
How can we allow others in and share the pie?

How can give them more time to squeeze consumers? They've already squeezed us so much with overcharging and so all the more we should allow others in to share the pie. For example, HK Broadband 10Mbps vs Singtel/Starhub 10Mbps is S$32 vs S$88 per month! Will they go bankrupt with competition? Of course not. Competition is good for them. Without competition, they grow fat and lazy. With competition, they would learn to become lean, fit and energetic.

Many yrs ago, they dun allow singers with long hair to enter singapore to perform. For the reason that long hair guys are real bad ass, the song they sing will teach singapore to go riot.
And now, u ppl must not watch satellite TV, cos the media from the outside world are evil.
These evil media contents teach u that what is real democracy, which you should not know as a good singapore citizen. They teach you what is true freedom of speech, which is evil, real evil, cos once u think u have freedom of speech in singapore and go out to talk about something political, u may get urself in jail, get urself bankrupt.
