Singapore sacks hangman before Australian execution

SINGAPORE, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Singapore has sacked its long-serving hangman, less than a week before the scheduled execution of an Australian drug smuggler, after his identity and picture was exposed by media.
"They called me a few days ago and said I don't have to hang Nguyen and that I don't have to work anymore," Chief executioner Darshan Singh told Reuters on Sunday.
"I think they (the prison authorities) must be mad after seeing my pictures in the newspapers," Singh said.
Australia's Sunday Telegraph said a new executioner was expected to be flown into Singapore this week to carry out the Dec. 2 hanging of 25-year-old Nguyen Tuong Van, who was sentenced to death for carrying 400 grams (0.9 lb) of heroin while in transit at the island-nation's airport.

OMG he served SG prison for so long.....did the work that nobody wanted to do for decades... now he get sacked over a couple of articles in the papers? whats this man... Why not just let him retire early.. instead of sacking.. it sure sounds better right...... haizz

Darshan Singh.. for having done the work that no one in Singapore wanted to do.. shouldnt even be sacked. the word "sacked" doesnt go well with his contributions all this time...

Nobody shld be free from discipline in the police force. If he broke the rules, he ought to be sacked.

Yeah did he himself go and reveal or what? If yes then he is in the wrong. But if those journalists just sneaked his identity out somehow and he got sacked then I am flabbergasted by what Singapore Government or whoever sacked him did.
Especially like what u all mentioned. He has been in the service for such a long time and has been loyal to his duty. And what does he get in return? Shame and loss of face for a mistake he never committed? Ridiculous. This will bring bad publicity for Singapore. The drug case already brought bad publicity. And I don't understand y they must fly in new one.. Singapore doesn't have meh?
Or izzit becoz of identity? Doesn't make sense..

Civil servants are not supposed to speak to the Press without permission. There are official spokespersons appointed for the job so that the govt speaks with one voice. Imagine the chaos if everyone can speak to the press, like in the USA.
If you are a civil servant, you are expected to obey the rules, otherwise don't work for govt. -
Come on. At least he wasn't hung for committing so many paid murders.
