But then, I really wonder if Malay kids are confused by this linguistic magic when 'air' becomes 'water'
And another "pai swee" item : official crests like that of the Police Force, or should I say, the Polis Force ? Army too- I mean all guys served "Tentera Singapura" with the motto " Yang Pertama Dan utama"? really big joke pai swee item.

As far as I'm concerned, I sing the National Anthem in the language it was written in - Malay.
With my family members, I honor my mother-tongue - Teochew.
In my understanding, the standard language in and for Commerce here, is English of the British standards.
I order my meals at hawker centers in various Chinese dialects (Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew) & Mandarin, and as well in Malay for Muslim Food. Unfortunately, I knew no one who'd teach me Tamil.
Technically, most of us ARE multilingual. I'm not taken aback by such a posting querying our ability to speak our National Language, because we are made up of many different ethnic groups, races, and religions.
In my opinion, it isn't just the standard way that we are outwardly presentable to the eyes of those around us, but more importantly, how we have stood and still are standing now, that matters most.
Comparatively: in my wedding, my wedding car was just an ordinary Toyota Corrola 1.6, and entire ritual was very simple and budget minding. An associate I knew, had a very grand wedding - huge luxurious wedding car and dinner - but his marriage lasted only one year. -

there are 4 official languages, naturally most would choose to master the one that gives most benefit which is english for now. malay friends that i have are mostly speaking english to their kids these days, but they are more chinese speaking cina at the expense of english....blame it on mediacorp for putting in crap english programme while mandarin ones are 'prospering' like nobody's business.....aren't you tired of the soooooo many idol or rather idle shows.....

This we have to learn from the malaysian chinese and indian in KL, they speak their mother tongue at home, mandarin or tamil, they learn their national language in school, and learn english in business.
Singaporeans learn only english for business, many forgot about mother tongues, whether mandarin or dialects, and most forgot that we have forgotten about our national language, we even have ppl who do not know what is our national language....jia lat. -

actually, i also can speak mandarin. been watching chinese dramas since P2. been 10yrs now.. so, if u c me, don't criticise me in mandarin. because I KNOW! -
