When asked by French paper Le Figaro about the furore over the scheduled execution of Australian drug trafficker Nguyen Van Tuong on Friday, Mr Lee said different countries adopt different attitudes with regard to the death penalty.
More than 60 countries apply death penalty, as well as many states in the US.
Mr Lee added that drug trafficking inflicts evil on thousands of people, and this implied that it was better to prevent it by punishing the traffickers, than try to fix the damage later.
It is a law which is approved by Singapore's citizens and has helped reduce the drug problem.
I think he should have just mentioned that it is govt sanctioned and not citizen-approved.
There is a difference of opinion here.
But it is obvious why there is a cast iron rigidity regarding drug smuggling. It
a. complicates cases
b. creates argumenatative grounds for doubt
c. provides the illusion that a non-mandatory death sentence on a case by case basis will increase the number of criminals trying their luck and getting off on a lesser charge.
d. may fail as a deterent to potential smugglers. -
Sooner or later, he is going to say since we voted for the PAP to be government in 1965, it means that we approve all their policies since 1965 and every other subsequent policies and laws that they make in Parliament for the rest of Singapore's history.
