Are we restructuring the economy to make it competitive?

  Where is our government's plan to restructure the economy to make it a technologicallly advanced value-adding economy surpassing that of South Korea, Finland or Japan?
  
  What are our scholars doing? Do you come across any major economy strategy being consistently implemented in recent years?

  Many strategies but proven to be failures.
  
  1. Logistics hub leaving many empty wearehouses along Toh Guan road and some uncompleted warehouses standing there for years because the owners go bust.
  
  2. Budget airlines with value air being the youngest airline to withdraw from the competition.
  
  3. Life science with no signs of life.
  
  4. World class transport with falling highway and dangerous buildings.

  Since 2002, many people have given feedbacks to the government's Feedback Unit to use our internal abundant resources such as empty lands, vacant factoris and many educated unemployed to get out of our economic recessions and overcome many problems.
  
  Up to now, we have not heard of JTC implementing another major value-adding or new technology start-up strategy but all the scholars in EDB are trying to claim credit for sending scholars to world universities.
  
  There is no rocket science in trying to create value-adding industries or technology start-ups. Just follow what Taiwan has been doing in going into computerizations as their major push into science and technology. They did it in a total master plan employing holistic manpower and educational strategy.
  
  At least we can use the empty lands or factories to put these resources to good use, like allowing the unemployed to occupy them on short leases to produce agri products that will substitute our food and livestock import bills. NTUC can easily create more of our own sources of food supply.
  
  Neither have we heard of any upgraded Economic Master Plan being implemented consistently to occupy our many unemployed new graduates or retrenched workers.
  
  Top down autocracy cannot work well and has not been working well. Top down leaders do not produce economic competitiveness as the people below are not well motivated or exposed to come up with good products or services.
  
  We are only seeing some ministers busy about multi-tasking the cleaners to do a better cleaning job. What else?

  How about all of us take pay cuts and also upgrade ourselves? That shld make us more competitive. Not eneough then cut some more so we can compete with teh Chinese and Indians who work much harder than us for lesser pay.

  brillant brillant brillant.... we should be self sufficient and not just importing.. but the usual problem is, will the cost of local produce is higher than the imported one due to expensive salary scale of those........

  The locally produced agricultural products can match the cheap China imported ones!
  
  Just make people like Salman unemployed and get them to work at China workers salaries. Then because the agri products need no shipping, we save on the shipping cost. So in the end, we can cheap and fresh agri products!

  i'll never believe it will never ever match china... land cost is the top issue follow by transportation and maybe equipments to reduce manual labor and the famous multi-levels of managers. all of these i believe is already much more expensive than imported ones...

  The cost of local produce will be high and cannot compete with those who produce them on a large scale. How much can you earn growing vegetables? You cannot do chickens because of bird flu and pig farming can pollute the environment....
  
  No, I would support the use of empty factories for higher value goods...question is, what goods? What can these unemployed persons do? Handmade dresses? Can they make leather goods for Loius Vuitton?
