Is our economy really recovering?

When i was young, i remember shops in the neighbourhood as a single unit and there is diversity among them. Now i see half-shops and many of them sells the same thing. There maybe as many as 4 mama shops in one row of shops cannablising each other, coupled with the might of large enterprises these shops flopped or are reduced to half-shops. there is one vcd rental store which stood there since i was young but recently it closed down too. There is also another fruit store which stood besides NTUC in my neighbourhood.That NTUC did not sell fruits in the past. However, it starts selling fruit a few years ago at cutthroat prices. Obviously, the store closed down. For the past four years since it close down, that shop changed hands many times.In the past, shops can have a lifespan of ten years but now they barely last a year and there are such things as half-shops. My point is how can the economy be recovering when things are getting worse in the neighbourhood? the government are lairs.

GLCs make all the monies from the people by increasing fees and charges. Those increases will be reflected in the GDP. Then the leaders will use the GDP figure and say the economy is doing well and give themselves the relevant bonuses to reward their good performance.

If our economy grows in GDP for another year but more citizens and new graduates are losing jobs to more and more foreigners, is that called recovery or growth?

the income disparity is getting wider and wider. the economy is doing well only in certain sectors.

Its only natural that we have income disparity in a global economy.
Our low skilled workers need to compete with low cost workers in china and India while our high margin businesses need to be competitive on skilled workers.
The only way to reduce this gap is to ensure that the rest of the world will buy from us rather than China even when our prices are higher. WTO needs to impose export quotas on Chinese and Indian exports to the rest of the world to reduce this income gap. -
The best judge to whether the economy is really recovering is the budge in your wallet.
In a nut shell:
Do you have more money to spend than last year?
My answer is NO. So to me the singapore economy is not recovering. I dun care what the fuck they write in the news. -

iregardless or what figure or what crap or so-call big time fellow talking... it all depends on yourself... the skills of survivor is very important as not much ppl in this world is ireplaceable...... no matter who say the economy is so bad or super good, there is still ppl losing jobs.. becasue there is always ways to make it happen. unless that war against terrorism gone the other way, all of us still got a chance to make yourself a worthly in whatever business operation they choose.... establish yourself first talk money later...

in the mid 80s, some VIPs from singapore went visiting in some popular states at china since it slowly started to open up. during a introduction / educational tour around some cities, one of them shouted to the rest of the group" HEY, YOU SEE THEY COPY THE TANG DYNASTY FROM SINGAPORE".
is it true or just a joke, i'm not sure but its quite consistant from different ppl i heard from. -

retailers expect the christmas sales to yield good revenues. why? because they expect bonus to be good as the economy is recovering.

It's a simple logic, if you were in their shoes, you would shout to your level best that the economy is doing very very well, so that you could pay yourself another one or two milions more in salary or another 12 months of peanuts bonuses!
The best way to gauge the performance of the economy may be through the words of taxi drivers or from those hawker stalls. Looks like the food stalls are also drying up in its customers petronising them. The local media are the last one you should believe in the health of the economy!No matter what, you will see more heartlanders drifting further down into the poverty traught and the rich are surely getting richer! -
taxi drivers always complain even during good times. Only fools will use taxi drivers as a gauge for the economy.

But seriously, I feel that the economy is not doing as well as the papers are saying but its not exactly doom and gloom either. -
Singapore is already the second richest country in Asia. We can't be doing badly.
