SINGAPORE : Pianist Melvyn Tan, the man at the centre of the recent controversy over National Service evasion, said he would defer his public appearance at the Esplanade and not be a judge in a local competition.
He said he came back to Singapore knowing full well he could face a jail term.
Mr Tan said he was driven by the desire to contribute to the arts in Singapore and see his parents.
He was fined for evading National Service, causing unhappiness among some Singaporeans who are against a fine for NS evaders.
In the debate that followed, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said he is in favour of firm sentences.
Mr Teo also said the Defence Ministry was reviewing penalties imposed on those who evade National Service, with the view to asking for stiffer sentences.
In an open letter to Singaporeans, Mr Tan said he is sad and dismayed he has become the cause of the uproar.
He said he was not given special treatment in court because of his profession.
[b]Mr Tan said what has happened has caused his parents and him anguish, and he has decided to defer public appearances for the NS debate and to continue without his further aggravating it.
He said he hoped one day he would still to be able to perform in Singapore, and be able to tell through music what he has found difficult to put into words
At least he's smart to realise Singapore isnt for him. All the best in his career and future in the UK. Singaporeans are just too narrow minded to arrow him while ignoring the larger NS slavery system at hand.

Minister realised and claim to do 'work'....let the citizens sleep somemore.Originally posted by Archie_boy:Honestly, before this issue was being raised, I don't think many of us even know who this chap is. So there is not much of a loss. Life continues.
At least, a Minister had realised there is a section of a law that is outdated. Sleeping for too long liao.![]()
I suppose that depends on how u look at it. The way Singapore is bleeding true talent and keeping only the people who sing to their tune, no wonder the whole country is going down the tubes.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Good riddance to bad rubbish
ripple effect my dear boy.Originally posted by dragg:why is it always about true talent?
are you saying that without a pianist like him we are going to lose a lot?
cause some people can't do anything else other than risk their arses?Originally posted by HENG@:ripple effect my dear boy.
Besides, as Tesco says, every little helps.
So yes. without a pianist like him, considering the state, size n shape of the arts and culture in singapore, we are going to lose a lot.
Anyways for u lot, why is it always about there being only ONE way to serve a nation?

his absence will only affect the arts and culture arena, and that represents only a small part of the economy.Originally posted by HENG@:ripple effect my dear boy.

u're thinking in terms of economy. I beg to differ. im thinking about society and its enlightenment and evolution as a whole. Maybe thats why u don't think its a loss.Originally posted by dragg:his absence will only affect the arts and culture arena, and that represents only a small part of the economy.
but isnt that what our govt is trying hard to do. filter out the non-talented.Originally posted by HENG@:u're thinking in terms of economy. I beg to differ. im thinking about society and its enlightenment and evolution as a whole. Maybe thats why u don't think its a loss.
Maybe singaporeans should stop considering anyone who can't contribute to the economy as non-talent.
