I'm sorry? Laying down 2.5 years can be considered courageous? Could you explain how?Originally posted by meleagent:Those nameless recruits as you so aptly put it put on hold 2.5 years of their lives in order to serve NS. Be it they serve in either combat or non-combat capacity the fact of the matter is that they served. How can they be called cowards.
From what you have stated, i suppose you will never be satisfied unless MT was JAILED / CANED / FINED and DEPORTED upon serving his sentence.Originally posted by look_see:when Melvyn went to UK at a young age of 12, generations of men before him have served their time in NS to ensure that his family and others have a roof over their head when they wake up in the morning...
but when it was his turn to do his part, he chose to run away.
when i was doing my NS in a mono intake, there were few hok kian pengs whose wife or gf had just given birth before their enlsitment... don't these people have a much valide reason than Melvyn not to serve NS? i mean how are they going to support a family with less than $500 of allowance? how would they feel to leave the wife and kids alone to fend themselves outside? but did they run away from their duty? no they did not!!
there are cases where NSF with parents or loved ones dying of a terminal disease and fighting for their lives in the hospital... did they run away from their duty? no they did not!!!
are these people any lesser being then a classical pianist? their only fault is they are 'followers' as some one mentioned?
As long as there is a system, there will always be people who will find loopholes to bend or break it. The difference is whether they did so deliberately or if they had no choice.Originally posted by AF2005:He better get lost from this country before the authorities change their mind when it hurt ruling party votes. They will realise the big mistake and jailed him to max.
This will go down in hsitory as the biggest blunder in our justice system. Who are the decision makers that overlook sacrifices and duty of hundreds thousand men who have done NS just for the sake of one NS defaulter VIP painist. It seems like the judicial system is really breaking up and inconsistence in sentencing in hard fact evidence offences.
How can this deter NS defaulter? In fact the reverse, more want to exchange NS for $5000 fine.
he played music 4 the ang mohs..Originally posted by MRMUSICPRODUCER:since SG will nvr give him anything then dont come back. think not of wat your country can give u, think of wat u can give your country. all of us did NS!!! whether we geng or not, we still did NS, we still served our country in a way or 2! & aft NS, we worked in SG, contributed taxes!!! Wat did he do?
I'm sorry? No where in my thread did i say that laying down 2.5 years is courageous. To me laying down 2.5 years is a friggin waste of my time which could have better be spent pursuing a degree or working. But like it or not i have served it and end of storyOriginally posted by BillyBong:I'm sorry? Laying down 2.5 years can be considered courageous? Could you explain how?
Service to a country is patriotism, not courage. There is no relationship between conscription and courage.
And since some people callously labelled MT as a 'coward', how will the same people term those who explore unscrupulous avenues to 'geng' and downgrade their PES status?
very well said!!! tats how i feel. he shd at least apologize or do something 4 the country.Originally posted by look_see:people are saying that those who are speaking up against Melvyn Tan to be myopic in that we should look at larger picture.
so by putting self before country/community is the way we should be heading? so this is the approach towards a more gracious and better society?
I am not advocating that we should throw him behind the bars or to kick his parents out of the country. I am just apalled that he does not seem sorry for what he had done.
people have discussed that we should let the past go. but how can we do that when he does not even show the slightest hint of remorse?
Those who geng and try to downgrade their PES status are a thousand times better than the coward who did not dare to serve a single day!Originally posted by BillyBong:And since some people callously labelled MT as a 'coward', how will the same people term those who explore unscrupulous avenues to 'geng' and downgrade their PES status?
Finally some good suggestions from you...that wouldn't be such a bad idea, since Singaporeans are sent to Detention Barracks for going AWOL.Originally posted by BillyBong:From what you have stated, i suppose you will never be satisfied unless MT was JAILED / CANED / FINED and DEPORTED upon serving his sentence.
While they're at it, you would probably demand his parents be booted out of citizenship for encouraging his actions and defaulting altogether.![]()
Just because the bank's alarm system is out of order is no excuse for you to rob the bank. Majority of Singaporeans served their duty, weasels dart through the nearest loophole..Originally posted by BillyBong:So again, is it his fault? or the system's? Why smear him for something the system screwed up?
So you admit he is selfish but you seem to think that is good. I weep for the future of Singapore if that is what you will be teaching your children.Originally posted by BillyBong:There is no point in faulting the man. He has already given up citizenship as a result. All of us can label him a coward and such. But in the end, from his point of view, he pursued a dream and made it big.
It was only by being selfish that he remained true to himself.

really? How do you justify such a person as a 'thousand times' more cowardly?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Those who geng and try to downgrade their PES status are a thousand times better than the coward who did not dare to serve a single day!
Again, your comparisons don't define the crux of the matter. Robbing the bank is taking advantage of a situation. He was faced with a career altering decision and certainly not deliberately finding ways to dodge.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Just because the bank's alarm system is out of order is no excuse for you to rob the bank. not the same because we were made to believe that this is one super duper alarm that is impossible to go out of order, remember?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Just because the bank's alarm system is out of order is no excuse for you to rob the bank. To achieve your goals, sometimes you have to be singleminded and (yes) selfish in your pursuits.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:So you admit he is selfish but you seem to think that is good. I weep for the future of Singapore if that is what you will be teaching your children.
Perhaps the intention was there but psychologically, he was also faced with a moral dilemma, one which had future-shaping implications.Originally posted by dragg:it is obvious he had intention of dodging NS. he could have come back anytime. why now?
i bet those who @&*&@ed so much here would also skip ns if given the chance, no? you'd be a farkin liar if you said no. i know i would.*2. Anyway i am too lazy to write a detailed post and make a reply to every post than condemns Melvyn Tan. Besides, now that Teo Chee Hean has made a statement, more comments is pointless. Sometimes I wonder what has Melvyn Tan done in his past life to deserve such hate to the point that they wanted his family dead.
Originally posted by BillyBong:so u will b proud of ur son if he escape NS to pursue his dreams? think abt tis way, if everyone do tis, who will protect our country? draft in ur wife? We have been inculcated and psycho-influenced too long to 'give back' what we have so-called 'taken' to the nation that we have become a society of lemmings, incapable of independent thought and action.
You make bold decisions and defend them if that's what it takes to be successful. You certainly don't apologise for them.
Has anyone apologised for the bungling of the 700mil micropolis fiasco? Likewise for the laboratory virus-handling screw-up during the height of SARS?
I would certainly be proud should my children learn to think objectively and with an open mind.
