I can't admit what I do not think, can I? Because I really prefer not to see us give ourselves such a bad image and name over something like that. As days go by and more things like these happen, I cringe more and more to tell people I'm Singaporean, and even then I can only explain that I am one because I happened to be born there.Originally posted by THE ANALYST:But do you admit that it is not correct and right to say that it is a trivial and small matter?
how now brown cow, if u call all the sentiments expressed by most of u in this thread "forgiving", then Charles Manson is Jesus Christ.Originally posted by MRMUSICPRODUCER:basically, we sgporeans r very forgiving people. we can forgive but we can nvr forget. tats all
maybe u should open your eyes and see that understanding and knowledge doesn't come from age alone. It comes from your life experiences. So u really don't have to pretend that u're all wise while anyone young is ignorant because sadly, and ironically, in your own words, life doesn't work that way.Originally posted by MRMUSICPRODUCER:i dont blame u 4 your ignorance. jus r jus a young punk who thinks u know everything. the real life doesnt work this way. tell u u wont know, explain u also wont understand. the real life will get 2 u when u grow up. tats all i m goin 2 say in this thread

Nothing worse than OLD punks who think they know it all JUST because they are old.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:These young punks need a thrashing...
It is also punishable by a fine. And u say service to the government as though that equates to service to nation. As far as I can see, his only real crime was he did not service the PAP. And if one can get away with manslaughter just because they are whitehorses, then yes this is a VERY small matter.Originally posted by THE ANALYST:This is a criminal offence that is punishable by a reasonably long jail term and running away from the service of the nation and government, you think you can really say it is a small matter?
hmm just to clarify, did i PM u b4?Originally posted by THE ANALYST:I am not forcing you to change your mind and principles.
National service is NOT just serving the PAP and/or government but is also arguably mainly about serving the country for the good and benefit of the nation. The main point of National Service is the able bodied men of the country being drafted to train to form a credible defence force to defend our beloved country and to keep it safe from potential aggressors.
In this way it is serving for the good and benefit of the nation and not just the PAP government. It is also for the good and benefit of the country and for us who are the people of the country so that we have a safe place to call home. On this point would you agree with me?
About the point on whitehorses getting away with manslaughter, personally I am not aware of such cases but if it is true as you claimed it is definitely not fair and is as great an injustice as or even greater than that of Melvyn Tan escaping with only a $5,000 fine.
And yes, escaping from NS is also punishable by a fine. Though I am not completely certain, I had the impression that there were others who escape being drafted got jail terms from the courts and were imprisoned. Is there a reasonable and valid explanation as to why some got jailed for this offence (if that is true) and Melvyn Tan (and perhaps even others) got away with only a fine?
One final point that has already been said many times before but I shall repeat it here is do you honestly think that NS mens 2 to 2.5 years of blood, sweat and tears are only worth $5,000?
Heng, in case you have not realised by now, I do not rant like a headless, stupid and senseless person who makes unintelligent comments. You see the way I have presented my points and views and I do not make wild and/or baseless allegations or make senseless personal attacks on you as others have. Because (I hope) we are matured people who can discuss issues in a responsible way and present our case as to why we feel how we feel on this or other issues. If you feel I am incorrect in any way I will definitely admit it and admit my fault, but similarly you must also see my points and arguments and see and judge if there is any truth in them. ( I hope there is!)
Feel free to reply.
you got my PM already? i KNOW I sent it. least you could to is not to ignore it and be polite, even if its "icy polite" polite.Originally posted by THE ANALYST:Like I said before, there are definitely other important issues in this world and in life and many which are even more serious and an even greater miscarriage of justice than the slap on the wrist Melvyn Tan got.
And like I said too, I am only human and I can only cover so many topics at one time. I am also not exactly the most free person who has all the time in the world. The reason why I focus on Melvyn Tan now is that is the hot topic at present now and at the moment.
I know there are other more serious issues in this world besides Melvyn Tan but this is one of the hottest topics now and also this concerns our nation and our government of Singapore and concerns an important and serious issue of our country which is National Service, an all too important, vital and crucial institution and policy of our country which has been the bedrock of our survival as a nation in the past, present and also for the future. Without it, we will be subject to threats from external and perhaps even internal forces.
If you want my views and opinion on other issues I will only be too glad to share them.
Have a good day.
This guy should be banned from entering Singapore. I am now considering putting my kids to overseas just not to waste his time serving the NS like me.Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:He had a cheek to earn money from singapore somemore!

I agree that we should prepare for the New Year.
However, I must give this parting shot. Despite what others might say and I do concur that there are other more unfair and unjust things in this world than Melvyn Tan's case I still DO THINK that the sentence he got was too light and it is a slap in the face of all those NS men who have given their precious time, youth and shed blood, sweat and tears for the nation.
And in case anyone asks and/or says why I kao peh kap bu on this issue, I say once again and I am getting tired of saying this, I am NOT kpkbing. I am giving my sincere and honest views and opinion on this issue, which as a citizen of Singapore and as an NS man I have EVERY RIGHT TO.
Have a good New Year.
Yes, there are many ways to serve the nation. U can say that A-Du, JJ Lin serve their nation by helping to bring a piece of Singapore to other countries, and let other countries know Singapore singers can make it big too, but remember they HAVE served their NS already. The reason why there is a outcry is because of the fact that most MEN have done their NS the hard way. Blood, sweat and tears were shed during the 2 to 2 1/2 yrs in jungles, out at sea etc. People chiong the land, air and sea during these NS years, yet there is this guy who went overseas and only came back many donkey years later, only needing to pay a meagre fine. And remember, the fact that he can't remember the amount of fine he paid shows u how insignificant he thinks the whole matter of NS is to him. That is a slap in the face to people who did their NS before pursing their dreams 2 to 2 1/2 yrs later.Originally posted by HENG@:ripple effect my dear boy.
Besides, as Tesco says, every little helps.
So yes. without a pianist like him, considering the state, size n shape of the arts and culture in singapore, we are going to lose a lot.
Anyways for u lot, why is it always about there being only ONE way to serve a nation?
