First of all, you can expect trouble makers barred from entering Singapore.
Secondly, like they said, IMF World Bank meetings are not prone to attract protestors so there is unlikely to be a show down.
Finally, even if they start making trouble, I'm sure it will be put down very quickly.
My guess is, they will be broken up even when they start gathering.
In other words, there will be no mass protest and violence or very little of it. What do you think those Gurkhas with their kukri knives are for?
In the event if mass violence to breakout, you can expect a baton charge that will send a warning to the rest of the world not to mess with Singapore. I say we cane the arrested protestors for rioting.
Some of the South American anarchists are more capable of fighting than your average NSF Police or Soldier.

They can, but once they show up on the grounds with the banner, the police will move in very quickly.
I think we should cane rioters or better still, issue warnings of caning before it happens. At least 3 strokes. I'm sure it will prevent rioting. -

If they want to protest, they won't bring the banner when they stepped right in to Singapore. The police will see it and detain them immediately. It defeats their purpose right away. -
You mean they won't bring banners to the protest grounds? Thats something new.
Well they can certainly do that if they are so intimidated by the Singapore police, but their protests won't be as visible. -
If I recall correctly, there was an article by a ST journalist sometime back questioning the double standards of allowing foreign NGOs to stage protests in Singapore while Singaporeans could not.
Anybody remember that article? -

On 25 October 2005, Singapore had conducted a successful WTO sponsored East Asia and Pacific Infrastructure Regulatory Forum (EAPIRF) that also attracted the attention of Environmental Activists and NGOs.
There was little fuss from most of the Activists then, as most came under close scrutiny and constant observation from our Singapore Police Force and the Internal Security Department.
With a wider world attention during the upcoming WTO meet in September 2006, the Singapore Government had already announced that they prefer to have foreign protestors - see report from Reuters published in the Singapore Window.
Is it double standards at play, or a more subtle practise of deluding World Opinions of the "true to life" tight controls that Government has over Singaporeans who dare to protests against Singapore Government Policies ?

i pretty much think that those known and experienced millitant protestors would not even be allowed to enter singapore during that period.............

There is no shortage of militant protestors around the world and they are pretty well funded and organised.
But the difference in Singapore is, these militanst will not be able to garner support from Singaporeans to draw on a big crowd like what happened in Seattle. -
Those protesters are not educated under the singapore education system.
They will exercise their creativity and come up of new ways to make their agendas known.
Can imagine the embarrassement when the gahmen get caught with their pants down. -
Good opportunity for our police and riot squards to test out the latest Tasers and stun guns. Come to think of it, it is a good opportunity to develop non-lethal weapons and strategies...I have seen a gas vortex device which can be laced with pepper spray or CS gas...should be very effective; and we haven't had a good chance to test out these new rubber bullet shotguns. There is also a Teflon type material (like those used on non-stick pans) which will make the road surface so slippery that no one can move or stand. The material can be washed away subsequenly with a high-speed hose.
Come to think of it, it may be a good chance to demo these new weapons and expand Singapore's economy as supplier of new anti-riot technology. Let's hope the Koreans do come...

The korean protestors were no less violent in HK than they were at home. The protestors used everything, except molotov cocktail. The HK riot police used hoses, pepper spray and I think tear gas also. Brute force was used on both sides. Despite of these, HK society din turn chaotic and the economy was not disrupted.
SUCH IS THE MATURITY OF THE HK SOCIETY AND THE RESILIANCE OF THEIR ECONOMY. The government of singapore and some singaporean should see that.
Demonstration is part of the right of expression. The korean demonstrators proved that they could be very violent but very responsible and matured, and their demonstrations did not turn into riot! The HK police proved that despite being part of a communist country, they allow demonstration and could handle a violent situation.
Imagine we have Singaporean here suggested using Gurkhas with kukri knives, and even cane the rioters. A repeat of Tiananmen in Singapore? It is interest to note that we din see PLA tanks in HK this time though HK is not part of China.
We are world number one in many things, but apparently not very mature when it comes to handling emotion, and not very good at judgement when it comes to the use of force

Violent demonstration is rioting. We don't allow such nonsence in Singapore.
