Two things you should know: First, Singapore is an independent country and is not related to China the way you described. Second, many Singaporeans are making a point of asserting a different Chinese identity than the one you are familiar with. Go to the countryside and rural parts of China then you will know what they speak. Even more than the languages Singapore offers. -
Chatted with a Taiwanese friend before and once we talked about this dialect thingie,it seems that the one Taiwanese used was known as "Min Nan" dialect,or rather Southern "Min" dialect("Min" is the word representing Fujian province). When i told him that Singaporeans called it "Fujian" dialect,you commented that the one that he heard from Singapore seemed slightly different and that it might be a mixture of Northern and Southern "Min" dialect.
And oh yeah,for the thread starter Singapore is an independent sovereign state.
