NSmen training: Be mindful of disruption to small firms

As a small business owner who intends to support the employment of NSmen and Singaporeans, I am often forced to consider Permanent Resident passholders as they do not have to do reservist training.
Many NSmen have to attend three weeks of in-camp training yearly and this is very disruptive to a small business.
A business employs a person for his contribution to the company and while it does not have to pay the NSmen salary (it still has to contribute to the CPF), the company loses its potential income for the period of training.
Many companies will typically pay NSmen higher than PRs, but because of the 'disincentive', it is no longer viable. Larger companies can probably absorb the 'losses' but for how long and how many NSmen do they employ? Has it become more attractive to employ PRs or workers other than NSmen?
NSmen are essential for the security of our country but has the system put a penalty on our NSmen and turn them into a liability, especially to small companies?
Have the SAF studied various methods to compress the training and reduce the training period to reduce to the minimum the disruption to businesses?
Have the military men gone overboard with their plans for training to increase their importance without taking into consideration the economics involved?
In the first place, can these military men empathise with the business world when they have not operated a business in their lifetime?
Our employee with the 427th SAR recently went for a two-day stint that involved rehearsals for a parade to welcome the new commanding officer. Essential? You decide?

Well, i am sure most SMEs are aware of such things. So, its common to employ PRs instead of local guys..
But the point is, its once a year thing. If the company decides to give up some1 who is very capable just because of the 2-3weeks stint, wouldnt it be worse for its own company functioning?
I do acknowledge the fact that it is pretty disruptive, not just to employer, but to the employee as well.
But like the propaganda, you have to protect your country..if not, if it falls, who still cares about the company survival?

Ng Eng Hen should consider tightening labour laws such that Singaporeans are given first priority when applying for jobs.
What about Singaporean SME proprietors? Don't they also have to go for reservist training as well? -
It's a fact SAF (and their officers) are only interested in achieving training standards and are cruel to small business owners and their business when it comes to reservist training - they're even made to suffer. So why should small business owners be interested in helping the government tackle unemployment problems? It's not in their business interest to do so. -
Thats the sacrifice we have to pay to defend the country my countrymen.
Have I suffered as small business owner due to NS? A lot.
But I took it and the only time I defered was when I got married.
In case you are not aware, SAF do give a lot of leeway to small business owners when it comes to disruptions for NS. NS has also been reduced from 13 to 10 years, with low key years among them, ie, 1 week or no training.
BTW, most ICTs are less than 3 weeks. Only exercises like Atec is three weeks and three weeks only applies to key personnel within the unit. The main body does only 2 weeks.
This writer is obviously trying to spin here by taking the extreme and pretending it to be the norm. Can't BS with a true blue singaporean here boy. Please BS to the ladies. -
Obviously Salman hasn't had the privilege to run a business like many others. What the threadstarter said is very true.....whenever I try to employ a local Singapore guy my female subordinates will kpkb...they want me to go for Malaysians 'cos we already have one chap who has to do RT every year cos he can never pass his IPPT. As a result, others have to do night duties for him...

SME proprietors? First, if you earn alot of money they won't call you back. But I guess the main reason is because of their age....probably finish their 13 year cycle already....like me.. -
And obviously Salman hasn't done overseas training...somebody should post him into a shiong Engineers Unit where he does overseas training every other year

I'm not sure there's an equitable distribution of the burden ... why is it that some chaps simply get placed onto a holding list and never ever get called up ... while others, particularly some commanders, get called up every time ? -

whatever the trolls say, here's a first-hand encounter when i was looking for work...
Boss: when are your ICTs usually?
Me: usually around March.
Boss: oh.. that's okay then... if it was like the other guy in that section, it'll clash and i cannot afford that section to be shut down for 2 to 3 weeks
i wasn't hired anyway but it did show that the ICTs sometimes are disruptive for bosses... -
So whats the solution? No ICT?

Servicemen in the holding list usually C2 or C9. a serviceman is graded C2 or C9, less chances of being called back. The higher a person's rank esp Specialist or Officer sure kena called back cause they r needed to lead. I hope this will help. -
All abled singaporean males must go reservist so Salman unless your co. hire lone singaporean male where you can plan swee-swee backup, you will not understand the logistic nightmare. And that is without taking IPPT and RT into consideration
