Surprise, surprise: Poll shows S'poreans least irritable in Asia

ACCORDING to a recent Reader's Digest poll, Singaporeans are not easily riled.
The magazine surveyed 3,600 people across Asia, with respondents in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and South Korea asked to rate 20 annoyances such as bad drivers and queue jumpers on a scale ranging from "extremely irritating" to "not irritating at all".
The survey results showed that Singaporeans get most irritated by, in descending order: Spitting in public, queue jumpers, bad drivers and poor personal hygiene. The survey also found that Singaporeans were the most tolerant and Thais the most irritable.
Several Singaporeans that Today spoke to found the results bewildering. Ms Jody Lim, a 29-year-old marketing assistant, said: "It's a bit bizarre. I was always sure we were an island of complainers."
Associate Professor Tan Ern Ser, from the National University of Singapore's Department of Sociology, suggested a possible explanation: "Internally, we tend to think of Singaporeans as easily annoyed. But in relative terms we may not be so bad. We tend to judge ourselves more harshly than we judge other people.
"For example, we wouldn't know if the Koreans or the Chinese are intolerant (in their own countries). We are confronted with Singaporeans all the time so we tend to think that Singaporeans are the worst kind. But when we compare ourselves across countries, we may be quite all right."
Another associate professor from the same department, Ms Paulin Straughan, suggested the response may be due to the possibility that Singaporeans face fewer irritations.
She said: "We have campaigns educating the public on social graces, such as the Keep Singapore Clean campaign. It may well be that these campaigns have worked."
For respondent Jonathan Siow, many questions simply did not apply to Singapore.
"The survey just asked the wrong questions. Public spitting doesn't irritate me because I don't see it," the 24-year-old student said.
"Ask how irritated I get when I meet the lift-user who lets the lift door shut in my face even as I wave my arms like a drowning rat. This must have happened five times this month. Ask me how irritated I get when Chinese New Year songs start playing everywhere next month."
But perhaps the last word should go to the Singaporean who, when asked to name an irritation, said that what was really irritating was filling out survey forms.

The WP produced a long-awaited 52-page manifesto outlining the issues they intend to champion in the upcoming election. It provides an alternative and feasible view that would otherwise not be available to the people in a one-party leadership.
I have not managed to obtain a copy of the manifesto yet, but it seems it has already begun to trouble the Ruling party; so much so that they have already begun their pre-emptive strikes to unhinge and discredit the party leaders themselves.
In retrospect, Salman has provided a 3-liner manifesto:We need to get to the root of the problem me friends.
Change the whining culture among young Singaporeans! That is the number problem in Singapore today.
which offers little more than VAGUE EXPRESSION and promises empty debate. There are no specifics, no in-depth focus, only the same 'salmanism' prevalent in all his posts.
Instead of addressing the issues, he degrades to taunting, cheap excuses and 1-liner responses while he continues to delude himself into believing that is sufficient to counter the volumes of detailed arguments presented.
His perpetual attempts to goad other forumites by demanding answers which have already been provided serve as a reminder to the selective and limited reading and interpretational skills possessed by a self-proclaimed NUS-educated individual.
It's amazing that he continues to live in his fantasy world of fiction and self-righteousness. -

We have at least got you to make progress from "ONE liners" to "3 Liners" and we will also strive to make the Government a.k.a the Ruling Political Party to also progress from the same 'goblok' attitude like you have displayed.
Singaporean Males have served our National Service and created a force to be reckoned with in Singapore by providing the INTELLIGENT MANPOWER to use the weapons that we have purchased WITH OUR SWEAT MONIES PAID IN DIRECT AND INDIRECT TAXES - and what did we get ? Loss job opportunities to Foreigners who walked into Singapore and take over jobs that skilled Singaporeans can manage.
Singaporean MALES and FEMALES have ALL made SACRIFICES for the last FORTY YEARS and TOILED to build Singapore's reputation and gleaming glass buildings - and what did we get ? Paying high price for pigeon holes that even the Members of Parliament will not stay preferring to get cheap loans from their own political funds to buy private landed properties and apartments.
Singaporean Students have labored and proven themselves to an Education System that are world beaters in ELITIST EXAMS - and what did we get in return ? A surprise to hear from our Government a.k.a the Ruling Political Party that we are an UNTALENTED LOT INCAPABLE to GOVERN OURSELVES.
Singaporean have toiled for FORTY YEARS - what did we get in our Old Age ? Many have found out in their Old Age that there is little for them, as their CPF has been sucked dry by the high priced HDB Flats which they have paid but with NO CASH to feed themselves or pay for the medical attention needed in Old Age - and struggling to pay for the high cost of artificially inflated utilities that are operated by Government Linked Companies - trying to stay profitable by competing with each other to serve Singaporeans.
At least as 'Whiners' we have the courage to speak out these problems, instead of 'goblok' who prefer to walk with blinkers and defend the misgivings with cheap excuses and divert attention from the real issues.
It is a slow progress, but the 'mountain will be washed down by the soft snow and piercing rain'.
Even the hardest precious stones will be worn down by constant rubbing of the weakest finger.
Try harder with your attempt at running in circles the views of others, you will soon find out that it is the fool who run aimlessly without achieving anything - except to prove his own foolishness.

Personally, I'm not ashamed to say that I have voted for the PAP in the two elections that I got to vote in the past.
Today, was glad that WP came out with their manifesto revealed when election date has not been announced yet.
Was looking forward excitedly to see more robust debate between PAP & WP, when Dr Ng fired the first salvo in criticising WP manifesto as "time bombs".
Since then, a few ministers including PM LHL have came out to criticise WP with sweeping remarks with more labelling such as "dangerous" "poison" without actually going into the specifics.
Was greatly disappointed that our leaders today are acting just like our beloved salman in this forum, by throwing a one, three or five liners with some mud-slinging at oppositions without the need to substantial their opinion or views with facts or proofs so far.
If those are the "calibre" of our present leaders in paliament, meaning NATO, I think regardless of who (PAP or OPP) I voted into the paliament in the next election, will not make much different to my life staying in Singapore. Though I must admit that I don't believe (based on PAP past track record in government) my life will improve (god forsake not deteriorate) further at all even if PAP do win all the 84 seats in the coming election.
My "FEELING" is that PAP is no more a pro-citizen party anymore but an organisation whose task is to go all out to "squeeze" as much from its citizen, thus "enriching" themselves "profitability" while mouthing that they are here to "serve" the people of Singapore.
