NS is reduced from two n half year to two year.Originally posted by spurs88:One can't help but wonder is the proposed NS Bonus a mean to cool unhappiness over the Melvyn Tan's AWOL case?
Heard that there are still much unhappiness over the issue.
What is the increase in fine from $5000 to $10000? Every month a serviceman serves his NS, he is forgoing at least $1000 in lost income. If this is multiplied by 24 months, he could have earned at least $24000. After deducting the fine of $10000, he is still left with $14000.
So come on, fining the AWOL personnel is never enough. He should be arrested and put in jail and made to complete the 2 years of obligation after that!
I think the idea was proposed to the govt. by the panel some months back. And because of this bad publicity, the govt. has no choice but to approve the proposal in order to soothe the anger of other performing NSmen.Originally posted by free thinker:I do not think so as it doesn't seem to make sense. Melvyn Tan's case surfaced about 2 months ago... I am sure the government or MINDEF would take more than 2 months to plan something like that. Unless you are trying to say that the government expected the public to react very strongly to this case then that is a different story altogether.
if he is put into jail, his future will be gone.Originally posted by spurs88:One can't help but wonder is the proposed NS Bonus a mean to cool unhappiness over the Melvyn Tan's AWOL case?

the law actually look at his background first before giving him a fine and not jail.

I had some debate over why that case was publicised, there is always a reason for something, and sometimes, damage control is there already.Originally posted by free thinker:I do not think so as it doesn't seem to make sense. I think they are all related. To pacify 700,000 NSmen who were upset with the govt. over the case.Originally posted by reyes:from what i know, since which emperor has been jail for commiting a crime?
as far as i see, this NS bonus has nothing to do with melvin.
it more of election gimmicks.
700,000 NS men vote does make up at least 30-40% of the eligible voters.
I suppose any bonus or increment is never enough for the average singaporean.Originally posted by dakkon_blackblade:I was rather excited at first when I heard the news, but it was quite an anti-climax when I found out that the so-called "bonus" would only be a miserly $100-$200 per pax. Surely NS-men deserve more than that?? Just look at what those useless regulars take back in bonus each year!!

If the idea of offering bonuses is to sprunce up the current NS depression of 'low pay', it is unlikely to succeed.
On the other hand, this act may alleviate the supposed dissent of Melvyn Tan's apparently 'meek' fine IF NS men cannot think on their own.
If money can so easily buy obedience, then the moral values of our upbringing need a complete overhaul.
