NS Bonus to cool unhappiness over the Melvyn Tan's AWOL?

One can't help but wonder is the proposed NS Bonus a mean to cool unhappiness over the Melvyn Tan's AWOL case?
Heard that there are still much unhappiness over the issue.
What is the increase in fine from $5000 to $10000? Every month a serviceman serves his NS, he is forgoing at least $1000 in lost income. If this is multiplied by 24 months, he could have earned at least $24000. After deducting the fine of $10000, he is still left with $14000.
So come on, fining the AWOL personnel is never enough. He should be arrested and put in jail and made to complete the 2 years of obligation after that! -

I do not think so as it doesn't seem to make sense. Melvyn Tan's case surfaced about 2 months ago... I am sure the government or MINDEF would take more than 2 months to plan something like that. Unless you are trying to say that the government expected the public to react very strongly to this case then that is a different story altogether.

I think the idea was proposed to the govt. by the panel some months back. the law actually look at his background first before giving him a fine and not jail. -

let take NS as a responsibilities to serve the country and protect our family.
he dont serve coz he chicken shit thus we shouldnt talk about this chicken men anymore.

What is going to be proposed is only $100 - $200.
So, nothing to get excited about.
They just lump the amount together to make it great and use some grand reason that it is for the 40th Anniversary of NS.
The move is obviously for some coming event in Mar.
Melvyn Tan is not longer a Singaporean so dun have to get excited about. -
I was rather excited at first when I heard the news, but it was quite an anti-climax when I found out that the so-called "bonus" would only be a miserly $100-$200 per pax. Surely NS-men deserve more than that?? Just look at what those useless regulars take back in bonus each year!!

If the idea of offering bonuses is to sprunce up the current NS depression of 'low pay', it is unlikely to succeed.
On the other hand, this act may alleviate the supposed dissent of Melvyn Tan's apparently 'meek' fine IF NS men cannot think on their own.

The Government a.k.a the Ruling Political Party think that Singaporeans are dumb and impotent, and can be forced fed whatever policies that they dump on this meek lot of Singaporeans.
No wonder there is so much self doubt amongst so many NS Men if we - who make up the bulk of the SAF - can truly defend Singapore, when we are all such a meek lot - that are afraid to place our vote for a variety of reasons, such as the fear of innocent serial number behind voter's slip to ensure no fraudently stuffing of ballot boxes.
If as Singaporean NS Men we have tolerated the wasted TWO OVER YEARS (3 for the older generation), and FORTY YEARS of erratic economic, education, social and political performance - due to the erratic changes to Government policies under the present Pollitical Party - should we continue to tolerate another FIVE YEARS of policies from this Political Party ?
A Political Party that makes policies that benefit members of their party, or the Government which they formed, by extracting every cent on a daily basis from the hardworking Singapore NS Men and Citizens.
This NS Bonus that is paid out as a ONE TIME PAYMENT will result in some other policies that will be put in place - which will suck us for a life time.
The Government a.k.a the Ruling Party gave us CASH REBATE to make the 3% GST more palatable when it was introduced, and handed out CASH again when it was increased from 3% to 5% - and GST will remain with us when our survivors pay for our own funeral expenses.
Was those CASH REBATES even enough to last through ONE YEAR of expenses ?
They have a solid reputation of 'taking with one hand, and taking back with two other hands' . -

Take whatever they give, you are not obliged to them.
You are obliged to improve this nation and republic, which for the majority of us, is still a home and a place which we care dearly for.So vote wisely, and do take note that sometimes progress is never painless. -

juz happened tat the previous few cases the defaulters got away with fine...

The bonus will not mean a thing to me. It's about motivation.
In the battlefield, if a general were to go forward and say to his men to follow him, I'll fight alongside with him.
If every general is 10 km behind the front line moving figurines on the big map in the aircon war room and I'm to sacrifice my life in the battlefront to protect the elite and the privileged few, I'll rather make peace with the enemy.
If an army officer is no good, he's facing enemy fire in front and friendly fire from behind. It happens in all wars.
One must have the passion to be an army officer to lead and win and should not be one because of the prestige or the good prospects that it brings.
By the way, I think the NS dodger is a hero. Somtimes a hero is one with the courage to run away. I was too timid to do that. -
