Unfortunately, the Ming Emperors decided to shut China off from the entire world, no doubt fueled by the egoistic mentality that China lies in the middle of all civilization and those tribes or states outside China are babarians. I guess it was this centristic mentality that saw the europeans steam roll past the Chinese in the three centuries China decided to shut herself off. Sadly, the Qing Emperors did no better, even though there were exchanges in trade, there were often limited and censured by the Qing court.

you might say that the vikings were the first to have 'found' the new continent but in a way they simply hopped from great britain to iceland to greenland and finally to the newfoundland so their journey was much shorter and easier. in any case it is doubtful they ever ventured further south to have discovered the richness of the continent beyond the freezing wilderness of their arctic landings.
columbus's journey was remarkable in that it was an oceanic journey that was considerably longer that reached land beyond what was then commonly believed to be the end of the world. it may seem trivial now but at that time no one in the old worlds knew, seen or even believed that land existed beyond the atlantic so in that sense it was a giant leap for mankind.
of course columbus didn't actually land on the continent, he ended up in the carribeans. -

According to Gavin Menzies, Zheng He found America first based on very circumstancial evidence. However, its weird that 9 out of 10 Americans who posted their reviews in Amazon.com rubbished Menzies's theroy without even explaning why. Mysteries such as Columbus sailing to America with a map that already showed the continent America.
Of course, many Chinese are also excited about the fact that Zheng He presumably found America in 1421. However, there is no surviving written record that Zheng He and his armada of treasure fleets rounded the Cape of Good Hope.
One thing is for sure, China is beginning to REGAIN, not achieve, their superpower status that they once were during that era. With an ever-growing economy, even the US has begun to seriously look at the threat of China's growth.
This time round, there will be no turning back. -
