NS is only a waste of time if u dont make good use of it. Take up some parttime courses to enrich yourself.
Basically, just treat it as a payment back to the government for all the discount (subsidize) they have given u for your education........and after u ORD, u dont own them a thing at all....
For those guys who have yet to NS ....

Well, let's make a challenge for ourselves here. If you are so adamant about getting NS liability out of your life, then just make a list of all the cons of NS.

Do we have a choice? We live in this part of the world? There must always be someone to defend our homeland which Singaporean spent so much of time and effort to built.

I don't yhink the government is going to change the service length to 3 years, all of that being rumours. S*F is mostly waste of time for me, just imagine me as a combat trained medic is being forced to do clerical work just because there is not enough clerks and excessive medics. And they pay use a miserable sum of money and make us work until sometimes late at night. Worse thing is that some of the officers who earn lots of money per month push all the job to his clerks who earns 300+ per month. Life is so unfair!!!!!!

I do not feel the need to challenge your question of where the Government gets the so-called subsidies from as it is quite obvious.
You might have the feeling that you have paid enough taxes to pay back the Government.
But that does that mean that we can skip the 2 years of NS training to Protect Our Own Country??
We have more than 250,000 operationally ready NS service/reservist men to protect our country as current. If our Government would have your mindset, it would mean that we will be left with less than 10,000 TRAINED military personnel to defend our own country.
So do you think that Your meagre sum of Taxes paid can protect Singapore??

Pardon me but your statement have sounded rather immature and contradicting.
You were saying that the gals pay taxes but do not have to do NS. So in a way you are implying that you pay taxes, but you still have to do NS.
So what would you say if the gals were exempted from paying taxes??
We have to understand that in this society, individuals of both sexes part a different role.
The men defend with their strength,
while the women keep our hopes of the next generation alive (ie: giving birth, taking care of the family.)
Well if you want to pay your taxes and not do NS, then perhaps you might want to switch places with a women and see how things work out.

NS is meant more for poor folk. For rich men or big shots sons, there are actually many ways to escape. I am now serving my NS in Mindef, seen and heard many cases already.

For your information, I am a combat medic, meaning that only combat fit personnel are eligible for the course. And mind you that I am a Pes A soldier.

Agreed wif millenium tt. NS r 4 poor pple like me. Rich kids(documents chopped wif "WH" meaning white horse) can always "siam" themselves from tough training. But at times, it is not true.

Well isn't it the case whereby some males would rather 'siam' NS???? Long before, the males used to study and study and made use of the Institution's deferring papers to extend their studying period, so that they do their NS later.
Well isn't it fair that the ladies want to work first and do the 'rest of the job' later???
Do you expect the ladies to be trained and go to War then???

There are also time where rich men or big shot sons do go for tough training in NS, these are mainly those who are very fit guys. For those rich men or big shot sons who are weak, most do only simple jobs in base. Thats is what I saw since I was posted to Mindef for the past 1 year or more. -
Well to adrain xtc:
For what I saw so far, those rich men sons and big shot sons (so call Whitehorse) usually serve simple BMT, like those in welfare BMT companies. After that they will be posted to simple unit which does not require them to sweat.
Rich men sons can see specialists until they got down graded is one very common example.
Big shots can visit their sons in BMT and bring them out for night snack as and when they like. I do not know what means they used. Maybe their ranks? Who knows?
These are some examples, if you want to know some more, can tell you more next time.

In certain countries, women also join the army. Thats because of the equality stuff.
Women in s'pore may be still put of army because there is no complete equality in s'pore. -

That is a rather cynical way of labelling 'equality' in Singapore.
In Singapore, we do practice equality, except that we include bits of humanitism.
SAF also allows females to join the Army isn't it???
Provided if the females think that they are fit enough and mentally strong to take the training.
So what's your rational behind the statement about females joining the army in the States???

well, actually max_rian means "siam" themselves from TOUGH TRAINING, NOT "siam" themselves from serving ns earlier. no matter u go ns earlier or later, the training is still the same.
regarding female in the army in other countries, i only can said that each country has different systems on manpower.

Have you served NS? If you have, I am sure you will see many examples there. For the sake of those who don't know, what I most commonly see from people is to see heart specialists or back specialists. These is the easiest way to get downgraded. See once cannot get downgraded see second time, second time cannot see third time, see until can downgrade than give up. Do you think poor people can afford to see specialists so many time. There are many fit people in Mindef doing clerk, do you think they really got health problem?
