This story sounds familiar.Originally posted by Calvin86:I heard this story from a friend....
There is this rich business man who has been very successful for forty years.
He makes milllions and millions has has a lot of money.
He rarely donates to charity, because he believe no one owes us a living but after some time he decided to donate a little. But still very little
But during one bad economic year when times werent so good, his company made a loss of 50 cents and he decided to stop all donation to charities. He said the company should only donate when there are profits ( even thought they have made millions over fory years and are still financially very strong.
He argues no one owe you a living, people should only donate when there are profits.
Do you think this businessman is a miser? If yes why? If no Why?
err the durain story?Originally posted by Calvin86:I heard this story from a friend....

He is no miser. He is just doing what his profession should do: Profit Profit Profit. Charity is always secondary.Originally posted by Calvin86:Do you think this businessman is a miser? If yes why? If no Why?

I dont think he is a miser. It is after all his profits. He has the freedom to do what he likes with his money. There is no universal rule or law to say that you must donate if you are rich.Originally posted by Calvin86:I heard this story from a friend....

I agree with that too. No one should be forced to donate. That would be an even more heinous deed. Some of these bigger companies donate for publicity. But there are some companies who have the heart, because their founder succeeded with help from others so they want to give back to society.Originally posted by shade343:I dont think he is a miser. Some of these American companies not only give money to poorer schools but also equipment and time from employees to help their neighbourhood. I wonder if singapore can be like the Americans.
