While the USA's election system has its pros and cons, the people there get to choose. The people get to question. Politicians there have enough leeway to put up a real fight. And although the Bush administration has influence over their media as seen from the war coverage (for the sake of votes), their control is still not as all-encompassing as the MIW in Singapore.
Singapore govt may suck up to America, Singapore teens may dig Hollywood blockbusters and western food.. but this doesn't mean many Singaporeans worship America and want to pack up and go there.

Let me see. There is no such thing as freedom as far as I can see. When given the power of freedom, human tends to abuse it and make it ugly. Power comes great responsibility and that is what human usually don't care as long as they don't get "hurt".
We keep saying that this is not fair, there is not fair. The question is, what do you mean by fair? The government is unfair when they increase GST by 2%, the government is unfair when utility bills are increasing. Is there someone who says that its unfair that the government give grants to startups, give you a good transport system, give you food and a roof, give you lower income tax and such. What I want to prove here is not what the government is giving or taking but what do you mean by fair. From what I've been noticing, we meant fair by "so long I get what I wants means fair and I don't care where you took it from" and "so long you take things away from me means unfair and I don't care where you give it to" concept. Am I wrong?
Please give me your opinion. Btw, am I out of topic?

Ok anyway on the point of fair elections, you have to admit that the government was WRONG to use HBD upgrading as a carrot. Don't all Singaporeans pay taxes? Do people in Potong Pasir pay less taxes, less GST (now going up to 7%)?

In Singapore's context, this will be disastrous. Why?
Singapore's majority is Chinese. Now, what if an Indian MP tried to get elected in a constituency, let's say, 60% Chinese, 30% Malay and 10% Indian? I know anyone with brains would put this aside but MOST PEOPLE WILL NEVER DO SUCH A THING. THEY WOULD VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE THAT THEY THINK THEY ARE COMFORTABLE WITH. And to put it matter of fact, no matter how kind-hearted this Indian MP-wannabe is, he/she will never have a chance (well, a long shot if he/she knows Chinese). WHY WOULDN'T THOSE CHINESE VOTE FOR HIM OR HER? BECAUSE HE/SHE IS NOT CHINESE.
It is just that simple why we have to have GRCs so that we can get them mixed with Chinese and allow them to get into Parliament.
What's worse, a parliament with two opposition or a parliament with two non-Chinese? -

Thus the election is made in a way whereby ppl will vote for them.
And IMO PAP is doing a rather decent job.
