GST was raise to 5% after that. that was when everybody was scrimping. We sacrificed by taking pay cut and they increased the GST, bus/MRT fare etc.
It is just like the comedy show where the general asked the soldiers to "chiong" and he runs in the opposite direction. the motto "in wealth and happiness we share, and in suffering and pain you endure"

They are supposed to increase the GST by 1% every year after it was introduced.
By winning the election, the party would have obtain the "mandate" of the people and they will increase the GST to 6-8% next year citing the non-increase for the past two years.
I think those people that think that the recent handout are sweeteners have not learned their lesson.
This is the money that is supposed to be yours for suffering low pay and more work load and more stress and less family time.
Singaporeans have become lifelong slave to debt and money.
The money would come and go.
The hike is coming after the handout so that you can hand-back. -

Where is the ORIGIN of the money ?
Are these not the monies accumulated through the Direct and Indirect Taxes imposed on the hard earned monies spent on essential services provided by the Power of One ?
Should we return OUR MONIES to those who first took it from us ? -

A mature electorate?
I REFER to the letter, 'Budget goodies not an election 'sweetener' (ST, March 7).
If Singaporeans have indeed matured over the years, as the writer would have us believe, why do we need group representation constituencies (GRCs) to ensure minority representation? Why are we not trusted to vote sensibly and not along racial lines?
The other and more important use of the GRC is to 'co-opt' new and untested PAP candidates by allowing them to ride on the coattails of heavyweight ministers.
If we are truly a mature electorate, we would have been trusted to vote a proven and winning party into power in every election even if its candidates are not tested.

Is it also coincidental that unspecified things will be raised after elections? -
Simple, after the GE, they'll silently change the tax system so that everyone pays more and more tax. They will then privatize more state own companies, put the ministers into key position to receive board director's fee, salaries; they'll increase transportation cost, electricity, water. Then they'll say these companies made huge profits and thus reward themselves with big bonus. Then, they'll say they need to peg ministers salary to private sector and increase their own pay.
Our ministers peg their salary to private sector but none of them speaks, act or carry themselves like one. Worst of all, none of them take responsbilities as they would have too in the private sector. -
Didn't anyone realize how our tax system has changed in the last 5 years... just a few key ones that affects everyone paying tax
1) Removal of $3000 personal relief
2) Combining of CPF and insurance. If CPF contribution more than 5000, no relief for insurance. That's if you earn more than $2300 a month.
3) Transportation reimbursement now taxable -
