  Earlier in January(2006), the Consumers Association of Penang and Friends of the Earth Malaysia called for a boycott of Singapore Airlines, the national carrier, to protest the warning issued by the Singapore government that it is prepared to "cane" or imprison protesters.
  
  "Imposing restrictions on demonstrations by civil society to express their outrage at the brutal policies of the IMF and World Bank that impoverish societies and destroy the environment, is indeed a restriction on the freedom of expression and the right to dissent against unjust policies", said Mohd Idris, who heads the two groups.

  i think we better concentrate on My NGO actions rather than canning to

  SG's Domestic Affair?
  Read again.
  Expressing outrage over the IMF and World Bank.
  This is an international organisation.
  How is this domestic?
  In the guise of helping economic development this 2 organisations has screwed several countries.
  
  If you read again,they are not afraid of the consequences,but protesting against the inhumanitarian punishment of caning.
  While you may not care about what the IMF and the World Bank does,they do.
  We have to care about domestic and foreign affairs.
  Reason being that,if someone is suffering from a particular foreign policy/organisation or corporation,we should find a way to express our outrage.
  I know some people wouldnt give a hoot about other people's sufferings.
  But I do.

  The need to moderate the vagarities of globalisation, and the often skewed decisions of the unelected members of international agencies is great.
  
  That is not interference, only people who do not care about what int'l org. does to the developing world and how it still exploits the North-South divide to generate wealth, will deem it so.

  So long as you intend to cause mischief in a foreign nation, you will be subject to the laws and regulations of that country's domestic rules.
  
  There is no excuse for s h i t-stirrers to be exempt from the cane. The cane is what make americans think twice before spray-painting cars and stealing road signs in SG.
  
  Malaysians really shouldn't complain. Their legal punishment system also practices caning. But instead of caning, they call it 'flogging'.

  I saw with my own eyes how the Malaysian police attacked protestors. That was back in 98 when I was shopping at Isetan in KL. You should have seen how the plain clothes policemen walloped the demonstrators without mercy. I saw a plain clothes man draging a woman by the hair down the street.
