Spore spent 10 thousand millions in defence '06

  Saw an article in Sunday paper that CHINA defence is projected at S$57 Billion dollars.
  
  Singapore defence spending 2006 is projected at S$10.05 Billion dollars.
  
  Ratio of Singapore defence budget : China defence budget = 1 : 5.67
  
  Singapore Land Mass : China Land Mass
  
  685 .4 sq km : 9,571,300 sq km
  
  1 : 13,964.5
  
  Any comments?

  Land size is not the main deteminant to decide defence budget. I am glad we have that kind of defence budget to keep Singapore safe.
  
  BTW, do you know there is a country that scrap their airforce because the country run out of money?

  I think our greatest threat now is the invisible terrorists. They are prepared to sacrifice for their cause so firepower may not be effective.

  Actually...phillipines also dun have much of an air force.Only a few planes that are prop driven to do some anti riotting work....sad.If any other airforce were to attack them...they would probably lose save for NZ...

  just curious.. if they use this as an indicator.. won;t countries like north korea be way above this 4-6% margin since they are so poor and yet their military expenditure is still maintained at rather high levels?

  terrorism budget is not under defence i think, more likely under some homeland thing. sg going for state of the art tech stuff and those don't come cheap. 10 billion is not gonna buy you too many machines. i think the air force in recent years probably took up most of the budget with f16 and apache. now that the f15s have been ordered, 10 bil is no biggie..
  
  saw the 30min show by mindef.....the computers they used quite impressive man...not too much field action though, only air-con soldiers and strategists talking about being a force-multiplier......
  
  nz is a huge embaressment, they now only have cessna prop planes for wayang. totally dependent on the aussies and americans for defence.....truly the white thrash of asia.....

  Dude,they dont have to think twice before attacking.
  Under war conditions,we can only survive a maximum of about 48 hours.
  We can buy all the new airplanes and helicopters we want.
  But at the end of the day,you cannot deny that there are so many people who needs help and an benefit from this sum of 10 Billion Dollars.
  
  As for pushing the blame to terrorist,I don't really place the blame on that for increasing our military expenditures.
  When there wasn't terrorism,there was communism.
  When there wasn't communism,there were concern citizens.
  The real problem is the paranoid system that has to stay in power.
  Only by having weapons of destruction,can they stay in power.
  
  Buying us a million SAR21 or M16 isn't gonna help when you do not have concerned citizens.
  How many of us would actually bother to report on suspicious objects and such?
  Then again,it's the way we've been conditioned in this country to be over-reliant on the state.

  I think this 3G thing may not be that urgent than putting food on the table for the ten thousand needy primary students in the morning. Singapore may go the way of India whereby billions are spent on developing the nukes whilst poverty still widespread if left unchecked.

  Doing an expensive song and dance that only entertains our aggressors (who are only waiting, saving and watching the show) is quite crazy.
  
  If our aggressors are not spending, we shouldn't overspend.
  
  If our aggressors are spending, we should spend.
  
  If we spend 10 times more than our aggressors, that's a waste of resources.

  Defence spending also create jobs and boost the economy. I do not know how to calculate how much is too much or adequate but I will rather be safe than sorry in times of war.
