Spore spent 10 thousand millions in defence '06

If a lot people are struggling to make a living then defence spending should be curtailed. Is it critically urgent to develop the "3G" thing now?

As far as I can remember,most of our weapons and such comes from foreign countries.
And like the above post,if people are still suffering,why should we spend it on defence? -

i mean yes i admit tt cannot rely too much on others to protect ourselves, but when comes real war time.

Singapore need to face the fact tt no matter how good it is still cant fight, jus like a person height 140cm 50kg will never win in a fight against a 20 yr old 200cm 100 kg guy.
Should cut down on this amount, hmmm NS should cut down too...a year or less can le...somemore really wasting 2 yrs in NS is a big loss in a man's life lo. Singapore wan to promote more kids, but guys cannot start to find a real stable job be4 they complete NS, guys wont marry be they can save enough, parents wont give birth until they think they can hav the financial stability.
is these reasons strong enough to cut down on NS?
sorry i sound a bit out of topic but tt's my view. -
some of you forget the reason for having a defence.
it can't win a war but it will make other countries think twice before they want to attack. its a repellant.
but if there are still people who are against NS, who are we to tell them what to think? if they think we will fail should there be a war, so be it. as much as there are anti-NS men, there are pro-NS men around too.

Hi, back to earlier mention of New Zealand. I think is a very scenic country. So peaceful that the last thing that comes to your mind is an attack. Probably she is not without air defence entirely though.

The reasons for the increase in spending is simple. Even when there are starving masses in neighbouring countries, they are investing in high tech weapons to spark arms races. We need to increase spening just to keep up.

Let me give you guys my take on this issue.
The government does not benefit from increased spending on defence one bit. They decided on what needs to be spent based on circumstances.
In war, you will pay any price to win. I will rather pay a high price for a powerful deterence now so that we don't have to go to war than to pay the price of a war. Thats Sun Tzu's highest level of strategem, the win a war without having to fight. The government is applying this wisdom when it comes to defence.
So how do you present a credible defence? Build a real deterence till it is obvious to the potential foe that they can never win. Send the message out loud and clear, in no uncertain terms. -

It was he who responded to my remarks and said that my questions were irrelevant and I responded that if he had not served the army or if he were not a singaporean...he had not replied if he had or he is...discussion with him, if there is going to be, has not even started yet.

If China military spending of S$57B is enough to gain so much attention in Japan & US then imgaine what S$10.05B on one a island state 685.4 sq.km can do to the defence policy of the neighbouring countries. Perhaps the US arms manufacturers are the happiest guys now laughing their way to the bank.

The biggest arms dealer is George Bush, and 'authorised distributors' like Cage are paid to get out of jail...
Jest aside, defence spending will always be high; we have scholarly mouths to feed, promotions to maintain, bonuses to justify, new toys to play with etc etc.
A breakdown of the costs predictions between capital expenditure vs wage bill will definitely illustrate a distinct lopsided ratio. -
