I was not even talking to Kopiosatu. It was he who responded to my remarks and said that my questions were irrelevant and I responded that if he had not served the army or if he were not a singaporean...he had not replied if he had or he is...discussion with him, if there is going to be, has not even started yet.

so whether he has been to army before or not, isn't a good gauge to a person's mentality. some might change after they go though ns, some hate it even more. what to do? -

It is more patriotic to serve and have a critical mindset towards NS, yes it's vital, but the forms of NS should and always be up for debate.

Singapore need to face the fact tt no matter how good it is still cant fight, jus like a person height 140cm 50kg will never win in a fight against a 20 yr old 200cm 100 kg guy.
Should cut down on this amount, hmmm NS should cut down too...a year or less can le...somemore really wasting 2 yrs in NS is a big loss in a man's life lo. Singapore wan to promote more kids, but guys cannot start to find a real stable job be4 they complete NS, guys wont marry be they can save enough, parents wont give birth until they think they can hav the financial stability.
is these reasons strong enough to cut down on NS?

Personally I think 2 years is just the right time, or minimum time needed to train a soldier, especially officers, and giving them some experience in operation. Unless our guys are very specialized, a tankee will need to know how to handle the 75 mm gun and not the rifle, an engineer will need only to handle a bridge and not the mines or explosive, .... then can we expect to shorten NS. Or we should have all NSF trained as private soldiers only, all officers are highly paid regulars.
or may be those with PSLE and below serve as private for 1 year and those who got O level will got for higher ranks and serve 2 years,
or compulsory military basic training during secondary school, those who fail BMT fail O level, .....
will 1 and a half year and 2 years make much difference to those who are going to the U or further studies? with the changes made to the calendar year in local U, dont' think it makes much diff.
If we spend only 1 year for NS, what kind of soldiers do we expect? boy scouts equipped with rifles?
those who went through army as a private, either as storeman, driver or the zor bo, will find 2 years too long. Those who don't want to serve NS will find even 6 months a waste of time. How a person went through NS give a good guage of what he think.
We either have a well trained armed forces or nothing at all, how much we need to spend in defence is another different story. To cut down, cut down the frigates, the F15, the new submarines, the apaches...these are the expensive items. May be we should cut down the number of tonners, but the soldiers have to walk. -
Leasing those premises for overseas training is not free.

Japan has all the money to be superpower but it did not. With US backing it can be nuclear power again. It is probably on par with Euporean countries like Italy and Sweden. May be behind France and UK. Guessing games here. Guys/gals what should be our realistic objective?

When you are poor you make do with what you have. We used old naval crafts of US for a start. Many smaller countries and much smaller population needed better defences but they dont live in constant fear of being attack. Lives still carry on.
