The jail term for default of payment of fine is about the same for everyone.Originally posted by king108:Frankly speaking, I don't pity Chee. $1000 per day for staying in the cell is more luxury then a normal hotel suite. cannot be bothered with his letters but i agwee that he is being silly doing what he is doing. i'm not particularly perturbed by his boycott. it is like Taliban asking the world to boycott Microsoft. if the world chooses to boycott SIA just because some unknown asked them to, then something must be really wrong with the world.Originally posted by Fatum:as I've said again and again here in this forum, I don't think he's out to get the votes of Singaporeans at all, he seems more interested in hurting the interests of Singapore abroad than in convincing Singaporean voters to vote for him ...
take a look at the SDP website, take a look at his "open" letters, CC'ed to everyone from the Indian Bar association to the assorted European Embassies ... (frankly, I believe most of them would have a good laugh, then drag his emails to the trash can) .... and recently, urging people to boycott the national airline ? ... who is he really working for ? ... he seems to me to be working against Singapore, rather than for it ...
the well being of Singapore and Singaporeans is very much linked to our international space, take the SIA boycott for example, yes, perhaps some would like to argue that it's a goverment linked company, that the majority shareholder is Temasek holdings, with all that you'd like to imply, but let's not forget that the well-being of that company has a direct impact on the economic well-being of legions of Singaporeans .... my folks have SIA shares, my sister works for the SIA, one of my cousins is an SIA pilot, some of the forumnite's spouses work the the company too ! ... their paychecks comes from the SIA, what do you think the effect of such a boycott would be ? ... he has carried his personal axe grinding against the goverment to an unacceptable place, foreigners don't vote, Singaporeans do ! ... to me, he's a political gadfly (one that i'd like squashed too) ... nothing more ...
quite true when one goes out of the boundry of being rationale he or she can do anything crazy.....hahaz.......Originally posted by snow leopard:cannot be bothered with his letters but i agwee that he is being silly doing what he is doing. i'm not particularly perturbed by his boycott. it is like Taliban asking the world to boycott Microsoft. if the world chooses to boycott SIA just because some unknown asked them to, then something must be really wrong with the world.
i'm not a fan of his but i urge you to also consider what he has gone through. he has been ruthless persecuted, hounded and destroyed. when you push a man to the cliff's edge, he has nothing to lose but to fight back in whatever way he can.
I believe you are right. For a person claiming to champion the political rights of people, he fails to connect with people. That, to me, is an absolute failure as a politician, for money-minded or otherwise singaporeans.Originally posted by claudetnt:CSJ it seems is the least understood person in our political scene today from most of the forumers here.
maybe his vision is not for the money-minded singaporeans!
agree. Chee fails as a politician because he is unable to connect with the people. He won't achieve much by going to jail.Originally posted by Blue Dolphin:I believe you are right. How many Politicians from the Ruling Political Party has been able to 'connect' with the general Populations ?Originally posted by lotus999:agree. Chee fails as a politician because he is unable to connect with the people. He won't achieve much by going to jail.
a Third World mentality trying to stake some claim in a First World.Originally posted by Atobe:How many Politicians from the Ruling Political Party has been able to 'connect' with the general Populations ?
Are Singaporeans 'genuinely connected' to the Politicians from the Ruling Party, or are they merely being politely circumspect in not being offensive in facing the POWER OF ONE ?
With each visit to the jail, CSJ is embarrassing the Ruling Political Party and exposing the Singapore Government for what it truly is - Politicians with a Third World mentality strugghling to manage a First World economy that is slipping ouf of gear.
Ya, he has few bright ideas. But at least he does some right things bravely.Originally posted by lotus999:agree. Chee fails as a politician because he is unable to connect with the people. He won't achieve much by going to jail.

Even if CSJ was right, even if the courts made a wrong decision, EVEN IF a trial judge is biased, you cannot insult the court. That would constitute contempt of court as set out in case law laid out by Sir Eardley-Wilmot all those years ago. The correct legal procedure is to appeal the decision to the highest court of the land but to insult the court for any reason will render you liable for contempt.
I don' think the law concerned is wrong. If a person makes a right comment or criticism,he shouldn't be contempt of court.Contempt of court means what one says is based on subjective feeling & not based on fact.
So the issue is whether CSJ said is unreasonalbe and not based on fact.
Hence the importance of having a jury.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Many people still fail to understand the law on this issue. If you don't like the law itself, well, you will have to appeal to your law makers to change it by legislation. The UK has a Contempt of Court Act 1981 which we haven't got...legislation can modify the current state of the law in Singapore if citizens don't like the statuts quo.
CSJ should have known that or at least his lawyer should. I think he is just a loose cannon...
