Unforturnately, this few years, many taxi operators and people (retrench, unable to find job) also turned to become taxi drivers. No stating that diesel, rental and other operating cost had went up, they are also hardup to find passengers during down time.
My brother also went to become a taxi driver after his retail business was no performing well. I think soon it may be my turn.
After spending so much money getting a degree, we have to resought to driving taxi..I don't know when to put only pride..

When a country's leaders divide its people into EM1, EM2, talents and non-talents, elites and non-elites, etc, the country becomes divided as epitomised by Dr. Catherine Lim's catch phrase of "Disaffective Divide".
The problem is found among the youths of today. Many are switched off as society discriminates against them with many turned to gangs and drugs. So the taxi-drivers' gripes and grumbles are simply the tip of the the iceberg of larger problems within the society as a result of long-drawn discrimination against them in one way or another. The root of the problem is not just about how much or little they earn or pay for the cab hire.
The whole country is divided into class one, class two and classless so many who cannot make it just blame it on the discrimination they suffer or perceive to be suffering. So this is Singapore's great success story which leaders have persistently broadcast to the whole as such. Is it a real success or hypocrisy to serve the interest of only a small section at the top dispensing controls over the rest. -
If you had to fetch 8 individual clients just to break even for your fixed costs for one day, would you have time to be smiling everyday and extolling the virtues and greatness of the people at the top?

You are outdated! Many cabbies used to be managerial staff or owners of some small businesses. They become cabbies after their companies relocated to lower cost countries or closed down during the 2001 recession. I sympathise you as you may had encountered unpleasant ride driven by the very few ruthless drivers , else wouldn't have be so hush on them.
They are also our singapore singaporeans that had contributed their part in building of this nation. Without them, could the oil companies, service station attendants, adminstrative officer, accounting officer, management executives, related service provider's employee, etc had the much more stable salary under the roof to collect monthly.
Few may have said the same as you, but regret after realising that they are now struggling with the sterling wheel on the roads. -

I think they represent the increasing ranks of the disenfranchised in Singapore.
Basically i get the sense from them that they feel like the government dosent care unless u are someone important or if youve got $$. Seeing as that they arent either of the two. They tend to feel negleted by the government.
They just wanna matter like the rest of us. They tend to complan that the goverment just exploits them.
Every citizen should have his voice heared.
I do however think, that they are misguided in their blind support of the opposition parties. -

Apparently, if a person is reduced down to driving a Taxi to make ends meet, he/she is likely to be pissed with PAP.
They created an economy that only the elites and high-flyers can survive well, people like cabbies are just crawling by month after month. -
