Why is HDB upgrading allowed to be a political issue?

I believe majority ppl of opp. wards are not swayed by estate upgrading.So they continue to vote for the opposition.

In the past,the work of town councils are the work of the govt.PAP leader ssaid the aim of town coucils was to test the ability of an MP.Now there are town councils,the PAP still want to use estate upgrading fund to its advantage.It is not only wrong but too much.

Just unfair
For estate upgrading,the excuse is constituencies have to queue up for it.So PAP wards get first.But for the govt fund for improvement works,opp. wards hardly get it.Now there is no more excuse.It is simply the PAP govt is unfair. -

Come to think of it, HDB is actually an axis of evil.
At first HDB started as a friend of the people, building cheap reasonably price public housing. 40 years later it has turned into one a huge money swallowing monster after they jacked up HDB prices.
Most of us work like hell just to feed HDB - its not fair!
As I sat down and read all your comments, I am puzzled as to how on earth did we all allow all these things to happen ?
Even this HDB upgrading being used as a political issue near an election sounds very ridiculous to me, and to my foreign friends when they asked me about it.
Will we ever have the chance to show Government what we really want in life?
When will the time come when we can pressure Government to share the huge profits they are making with our reserves (our national savings) ?
Government has invested billions in foreign countries, how about they investing a small percentage of that to help reduce Singaporean's stressed-out lives, caused by high cost in here?
It wont hurt our reserves, which has been said to be obscenely too large for a small nation. -

any eviction in any other nation would be met with legal challenges, but here, the SLA has become too powerful, and it helps the state over the people.

Nowadays seeing people got into debt for 30 years for buying house makes me think that is this life all about just to buy a place to live and to set up family. What a high price to pay. Young man and ordinary folks who need to get a new place to settle down are going to suffer. How can HDB make so much profits at the expenses of the people? -

The new PAP candidate who is the former CEO of HDB said HDB could do estate upgrading for opp. wards but the problem was there was no requests from the 2 wards when he was the CEO.Whe PM & ministers said priority for estabe upgrading would be given to constituencies of the rulint party,would the CEO of HDB dare not to follow the directive?HDB as a national govt body,it should take care of all constituecies including the opp. one.Does it need requests from opp. wards to discharge its responsibilities? -

For the coming elections,it seem PAP is not going to say estate upgrading would depend on electoral support. If is it true, PAP has finally realise its mistake. What causes it?Not due to the opposition. Probably due to internet forumers.

National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan has reiterated that upgrading is a programme that is offered by the People's Action Party (PAP), not the opposition parties.
Speaking at a community event in Tampines on Sunday, he said as such it is only fair that those who vote for the PAP get their precincts upgraded first.
Mr Mah added that the opposition has never offered upgrading as a platform for the people and in fact have argued against it in Parliament.
And upgrading, whether it is lift upgrading or main upgrading, is part of a package of policies that the PAP has in its manifesto.
He said: "When it comes to having to establish who is first in the queue, I will have to bear in mind that the PAP MPs offered this in the manifesto, their residents voted for it, voted for them and their manifesto. On the other hand, there is the opposition ward that, in the first place did not offer it, in the second place did not vote for it. I think the decision is quite obvious."
He was responding to questions on whether he expects upgrading to be an issue raised in this General Election and if it is fair to link votes to upgrading.
Mr Mah says that it is only fair that the people who vote for the PAP should get the upgrading first, and even among them, they have to wait for their tFair that HDB residents who vote for PAP should get upgrading first: Mah

He said: "We will look at the location and, everything else being equal, we will decide that between the PAP and the opposition ward which one will go first, and the answer is pretty obvious - we will choose the PAP ward first." - CNA/ch
Such a funny comments.. It shoudln't matter whoever brought it up first in the parliament and holding it as a threat to opposition with regards to the common singaporeans.
Moreover, an excuse not to upgrade the estates where opposition voters (Still Singaporeans) reside should not be entertained. Well the bill will still be passed eventually since the PAP has the largerest number of votes in the parliament. Wouldn't it be causing more social drifts between fellow singaporeans??? --> where something of a national interest are used to divide the people apart.
Again - upgrading should be a national interest and not a blackmailing tool for political agenda.
Why are we paying millions to someone especially to create a social drift between singaporeans.. such a shame. -

In fact, the dead ND minister Teh Cheang Wan,who was investigated for corruption,started a policy to favour PAP wards.So the govt continue coming out similar policy which the suspected corrupt Teh did. Of course,I am not saying our ministers are similary corrupt.But i do believe using the estate upgrading tactics to win vote is bribery under the law concerned.

my concern is upgrading is not FREE la..............
my side here is having urgrading programme now........until now i still don't know will cost how much???????????? i had write e-mail to HDB they say don't worry we pay only 10% only of the upgrading cost......how can i got this type of answer this is our hard earn $ la........
for my view presently our living standard is very very high la.......
1) car park fee for multi carpark is $75......why is so expensive???
2) every month town council $ from us.....its cost me $48 for 4 room..for my knowledge smaller room flat pay less... why is this so..... did they clean our house also? for my view this payment should be the same for hdb flat la because the only clean outside the corridoor only not inside of our house RIGHT???????? -

Minister Mah said voters of the opposition wards never supported estate upgrading. How did he know?Was there a survey to find out?Mr Mah,just admit that the policy is to discriminate against opp. wards, full-stop.

Hougang PAP cnadidate said National Development Minister supported his $100 million upgrading plan for his ward if he was elelcted.Why is there such condition?Isn't it to use public fund to help a candiate & a party to win votes?

Now we hear that Patong Pasir and Hougang's lift upgrading is free one..free one mean can go up cannot come down?

The government should consist of the ruling party MPs and opposition MPs and NMPs and the whole public service hierachy. There should be no artful split of the government into two camps as the ruling party MPs and one opposition MPs once election is over even though opposition MPs may speak up against ruling party's policies.
Leaders should diffentiate themselves from their party once they form the government in parliament and focus from that day onwards on achieving their collective needs and aspirations of the people. It should be made an offence or contempt of parliament for PM or ministers or anyone to try to split the parliament into ruling party MPs and opposition MPs thereby dividing them into two different camps.
Both ruling party members and opposition members are paid their salaries by the people from the people's taxes and surpluses. The PM or secretary general of ruling power do not have their own monies to pay them these salaries.
With every election, there should be growing maturity and do not engage any more in such conflicts or divisions. Leaders must serve with dedication and distinction to people's cause for upgrading themselves socially and economically. They should strive for first-world standard and not continue to treat themselves as bestowers of favour or pay master to their own MPs or supporters as paymasters as they are not.
