I don't know if the laws have changed. According to my books, the President is part of the Executive under the Singapore Government. The other two are Legislature and Judiciary.Originally posted by Atobe:Singapore's President acting like "backup" ?

The Singapore President will be lucky if he is not backed up against the wall by the Prime Minister, let alone trying to dream of having any executive powers to remove a corrupt Prime Minister.
When the Singapore President has little or zero Executive Powers - and cannot even ask for the accounts of the Singapore National Reserves to find out the size of the Reserves which the President is supposed to be guarding with his Second Key - the Singapore President is no better than he previously was acting as a Ceremonial Head of State instead of being an Elected President with some limited powers to be a guardian to our Reserves.
After the incredible act of the late President Ong Teng Cheong - in challenging the Government of PM GCT for the full accounting of the Singapore Reserves - the Elected President legislation was amended to curtail his already limited powers, making him totally ineffective to challenge the Elected Government.
That was the last time we saw an Elected President questioning the work of an Elected Government.
Ours is not a presidential system...the head of the Execcutive branch is the Prime Minister, not the President. Since the President is considered part of the Executive, he cannot overrule the PM.Originally posted by Atobe:Singapore's President acting like "backup" ?

He can't overule, but he can veto. PAP introduced a system called CPA, and the President has to consult them in order to veto. If the members in the CPA don't agree with the President, things will still be done as the PM deems fit.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Ours is not a presidential system...the head of the Execcutive branch is the Prime Minister, not the President. I think the government has a change of mind after Ong Teng Cheong, who considered his role as independent of the Executive in matters touching on his Presidential mandate. The government probably did not think it through carefully enough as to the implications if a President should challenge the cabinet on political decisions regarding the national reserves. Now that they know the possible impact, they are trying to backtrack. They probably wish they had never thought of an elected president in the first place.
He will be too busy contesting GRC of the Yin country and repeating the old tactic of wiping crocodiles tears with his white handkerchief, later shouting madeka !Originally posted by mistyblue:he's continuing his work in the 'Ying' Country and use dreams to tell his Son what to do????![]()

The improvement of S'pore from 1965 till today is obvious and most credits were attributed to his capabilities and foresight. We are regarded as an economic powerhouse in our region although we do not have any natural resources. We enjoy may things our neighbours were envious of. He will go down in history as the "Father of Modern Singapore".
Give the man the due credit he deserved. It will be a great loss if he leaves. Now that he's still around, I wished him health and longevity.![]()

The President has the power to safeguard the financial reserves of our country. But whether this translate to asking for our national accounts I don't know. He also have the power to permit investigations of corruptions.
According to this website, http://www.istana.gov.sg/cpa.html, he can veto after consulting the panel. That's pretty limited in way, but he can still do so.
