However, Jurong GRC MP Ong Chit Chung said that the move to stiffen the penalties “fails to answer or provide the solution to the question why Singaporeans abscond from NS”.To which Dr Ng answered:
If that's true, why bother to increase the fine since he himself admitted that it's our FAILURE (the govt's) to inculcate the concept of NS into families?Originally posted by shade343:Maybe his point was that, no amount of punishment will solve the problem. The only true solution lies in the mindset of the people.
But its the people who wanted to see the fines go up and jail term doubled. Not him.Originally posted by BillyBong:If that's true, why bother to increase the fine since he himself admitted that it's our FAILURE (the govt's) to inculcate the concept of NS into families?
If not, why stop at 10K? Someone's going to say that ain't enough either...might as well revise the figure to 1 mil and turn it into a real deterent.![]()

If you read the opening post by BillyBong, you will note that the Second Defense Minister is botching in any attempt to raise the threshold of pain towards draft dodgers.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:A sense of identity certainly helps but does not take away the financial sacrifice and opportunity costs in national Service...and that is true in many other nations with compulsory national service as well. Yes, majority of Singaporeans support more stringent laws against NS dodgers and the ruling party has done well in this regard to listen to us.
yea sure, as tho u represent "majority of singaporeans"Originally posted by oxford mushroom:A sense of identity certainly helps but does not take away the financial sacrifice and opportunity costs in national Service...and that is true in many other nations with compulsory national service as well. Like i said, sound very "chou pi" but they don't realise that.Originally posted by Atobe:If you read the opening post by BillyBong, you will note that the Second Defense Minister is botching in any attempt to raise the threshold of pain towards draft dodgers.
Has "the ruling party has done well in this regard to listen to us" ?
Could it be that some 'White Horses' has turned rouge and galloped away from the Singapore Coral ?

HENG@ do be mindful of your language when posting. Everybody is entitled to their views. There is no need to resort to personal attacks.Originally posted by HENG@:yea sure, as tho u represent "majority of singaporeans"
so how come they only listen to "majority of singaporeans" on this issue only, and totally disregard what people are saying about other issues?
oh this is when u claim that people are contented and have no "other issues" right?
i wonder if u realise how obnoxious and "chou pi" u sound when u keep saying self-delusional bullshit like : "Yes, majority of Singaporeans support more stringent laws against NS dodgers and the ruling party has done well in this regard to listen to us."
I can just imagine your high pitched, whiney ass-kissing voice when u say that
everybody might be entitled, but i sure as hell doesn't need someone to tell me he is representing us when he is not. Just how self-effacing is that obnoxious line? u tell me. He's not the one whose friend died as a result of some white horses's fun going overboard, and sure as hell he didn't have a friend's murderers protected by a govt cover-up. Yet he comes into my face and talks shit? oh please. if the govt has already covered it up, how would my bringing the evidence out into the open do anything, other than do me harm? and yet thats what he comes here to say, knowing full well that its something i cannot do, because i have to protect not just me, but my sources.Originally posted by greengoblin:HENG@ do be mindful of your language when posting. Yeah, it's a mighty no-brainer to increase fines and tweak some legislation without asking themselves the tough question, like e.gOriginally posted by oxford mushroom:A sense of identity certainly helps but does not take away the financial sacrifice and opportunity costs in national Service...and that is true in many other nations with compulsory national service as well. If male citizens are not to lose out on their career path, NS period should be shorter as short as possible. Female citizens actually are now equal to male citizens in terms of jobs, pays and benefits. Woman charter is even more tilted in favor of female. So Female should do NS and their career path be put on par with male citizens.Originally posted by Anti-RuleSS:Minus the timing for NS from 2 years to 8 mths and ban reservist permanently!

U see it as taking 2 yr out of when u are 20. ppl see it as losing 2 yr to make money that also means that the opportunity to be rich is miss by 2yr. Assuming that a graduate earn 2k per month. he earns 24k a year and 48k in two yr. That is excluding the non countable like the ability for promotion. The sum in which the gov give is much less that that. Plus the time taken for reservist how much do u think u lost?Originally posted by Parka:The utimate punishment is not ask people to pay fines. It's to ask them to pay with their time.
Time's cheap when you're young.
