Dr Mahathir: Malaysia a ‘half-past-six country with no guts’

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad returned from a two-week holiday in London yesterday as defiant as ever, refusing to cease disputing the GovernmentÂ’s decision to scrap the Johor Strait bridge project.
He said as a citizen, he had a right to do so if the countryÂ’s sovereignty was surrendered.
"If you surrender your sovereignty to Singapore ... I think this is a half-past-six country which has no guts," the former prime minister told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on his return.
"I promised not to interfere in politics and I have not said anything about many things done which were wrong.
"But this is the limit — to surrender your sovereignty to Singapore as if you are scared of them.
"This does not speak well of your self-respect."
Asked to what extent he would pursue the matter, Dr Mahathir said:
"I cannot go to war ... I have no power."
He dismissed talk that Umno members were worried that his conflict with the present administration over the bridge issue would disunite Umno.
The bridge issue, he said, had nothing to do with disunity and was about self-respect.
Asked why he had not given his recent open letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi instead of distributing it to Umno members, Dr Mahathir said:
"I did not write the letter to him. What for? Even if I talk to you (the media), it wonÂ’t see the light of day in the papers.
"Even if I were to give it to you to publish, you will not do it.
"Even if you do, Kalimullah will chop it," he said, referring to New Straits Times Press deputy chairman and editorial adviser Datuk Kalimullah Hassan.
However, Dr Mahathir described his relationship with Abdullah as "very fine and very good".
"I am unhappy only when you kowtow. This is our country, yet we have to seek permission from another country to build a bridge on our side. Where is the sovereignty?"

I remember years ago when Singapore reclaimed land on our side of the Causeway, the Malaysians didn't respect our sovereignty and objected strongly. They even took us to an international court.
Now he's bitter over a milder medicine we're giving him back? -
Dog Mahathir is a arEHOLE! I have never like him, the cocky looks on his face just pisses me off. He is just been racist and couldn't accept the fact that malaysia malay goverments gave the singaporean chinese goverments face.

Am I racist when my view differ from yours?
No matter what, Dr Mahathir is a great man in his own way. He still hold the honor of being the longest serving PM in Malaysia (comparable to MM Lee?). He had done a lot of wrongs but also done a lot of rights also (comparable to Â…Â…). That is why Malaysia is of today, he had contributed partly to. -

sg govt dun need the msian govt to give face. u like to build the bridge, pls go all the way. dun be like a chicken, say 1 thing, do another thing. big cover up here n there and finally sg kena the blame.
it is the msian govt that didn't find out the consequences of going ahead with their half of the bridge building that resulted in this course of action.
sg pple dun need to say msia weak...msia has proven itself weak to the whole world with her own actions.
and whether its a rough way or otherwise... who cares. u guys have ex-PM that wanted to go to war (if he is still in power) just bcos of this bridge issue...how gentle can that be?

[/b] Badawi may have succeeded Mahathir as the leader but still I don't think one should go around calling the leader of his country a coward in the national newspaper and not to mention sending a letter to all umno members except badawi is like trying to mastermind a revolt or coup? People may think Mahathir is planning to take back the premiership he gave to badawi.
I think there will be a showdown soon maybe one behind closed doors. you cannot have 2 tigers on the same hill. -

actually, now is a good time for PAP to use Malaysia's political tactics.
In the past, during certain politic manouvers, Malaysia would accuse Singapore of something so that the people all unite behind the present govt and forget about their issues.
PAP, instead of hantuming poor (really POOR) opposition members, can try a strategy of accusing Malaysia of something, so that Singaporeans will unite behind the govt and forget about the GE. Otherwise, at the rate those PAP people are going, the opposition is going to get lots of sympathy and "I can't stand PAP" votes
