As someone who has served, I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. All I know is NS is not simply a matter of instilling manners because if we're using that as a yardstick, then I say the PRC nationals beat us hands down in terms of rudeness.Originally posted by will4:I am a PR n served my NS already. NS is about personal sacrifice and it is what makes us truly Singaporean, it is about the guy next to you in the fire trench. It is about your comrades, your family. And appreciating what is your home. It is not about political affiliations. Because when the sh*t hits the fan, you can be assured that those who can afford to run (the elites who harp so much about loyalty to country, as well as the fair weathered PRs) will run. And those left behind will have to band together and rise to the challenge. -

I belief older workers are not forgotten but have to be push aside to make way for the younger one. This is a more desirable situation than many youngsters out of work and higher potential to create trouble in the streets.

The govt must do something about the influx of "FT". Many educated Singaporeans are loosing out to FT not because of lack of Education nor Experience but because most FTs are willingly to work for lower salaries. Some MNCs prefer to bring in FTs for obvious reasons .
A recent letter writer to the ST forum pages highlighted another problem when he and his Singaporean friends were rejected by NUS when they applied to do their PHDs only to find them being accepted by the IVy legues, Harward, MIT, Oxford etc. Good enough for some of the best Universities but not good enough for singapore's NUS. Reason less than 30% of the PHD students are singaporeans or meant for singaporeans. The authorities must do something rapidly to address these issues. -

The only reason why we have so many "foreign talents" in Singapore is simple... to keep Singaporeans exploited and the rich richer. You see given the cost we have here in Singapore our pay is peanuts (not the SM Goh wife's type of diamond peanuts; the real "thor dao").
So how to ensure that our pay stays as peanuts? Get foreigners in to compete and lower the wages... the foreigner can accpet such low wages because at home theie costs are much lower.
So you see the "CONSPIRACY?" Make everything expensive (especially housing so the very rich with extra house can profit) but exploit Singaporeans by keeping the wages low and to do that; bring in the foreigners. -

Hello, PR, China nationals are Numero UNO, in being RUDE, LOUD, & DISGUTING in public, ok.
While I agree that certain pockets of Singaporeans are lacking in courtesy because of upbringing or whatever, but you don't come and give us that crap about NS teaching us mannerisms.

We have no jobs for diagnostic radiologists...they have been outsourced. So doctors just have to undergo training all over again and move to a different speciality or accept lower pay as a GP.
Everyone faces global competition. What makes us so special? If you cannot compete you lose your job or accept lower salary... -

This is only the tip of an iceberg. There were talks of having 8 million people in S'pore to sustain or improve the wealth (and for who?). S'poreans are not producing enough babies, they have to get from overseas. Imagine 8 million and S'poreans constitute only 2.5m we are going to be marginalised by these Phds and what not.

I don't see Australia giving out jobs just because of global competition - they only allow foreigners to enter when there is no Australians with that specific skill set. In Singapore:
Scholars get it good although some of them cannot do the job
Foreigners get it good although some singaporeans are equally good or are more experienced
and the commoners get left out in the cold.
So what to do?
Just pack up and leave for other parts of the world willing to employ you with better conditions and get labelled by our government as quitters
OR just stay back and be bitter and twisted and be a non quitter
Either way lose-lose situation for Singapore. -

I am not saying there are no taxes. Other than income tax, Singapore have extra charges for? ERP, COE, Road tax? When they pass the bill, there s no opposing voice. And I need not tell you why cos ANY good opposition leader in the past is either sued or bankrupt.
Have the gahmen ever thought of how the ppl feel? Everytime they change their focus of field expertise, from like engineering to IT, how about those ppl who are engineered trained in their 40s to 50s? Work at MacDonald's? Even if they receive new training in IT field, they have to compete with young ppl who might be fresh grads.
For your information, we are a small population no doubt, but I find it strange that singapore is pushing to train world class atlethics and other talents and at the same time when they are at the peak go NS? I know people will cry foul play if a few do not have to serve NS, but exemptions can be made. Good althletics or other talent like singers and musicians( I would not want to give more examples as u got the picture... right? If not too bad lah.) make it like a reward, if they can reach that caliber, they qualify for only BMT training then off they go? Rules are man made. Anything is possible.
I am not with any opposition party, but I believe in a person's freedom of speech and demanding equality.

I take it you've not heard about the $9000 per year x 3 years grants + 3 years work visa handed out to foreign students by the government. Why are foreign students entitled to such massive subsidies at the expense of us tax payers? every morning on the MRT, i see a lot a lot of malaysians, even thais and indonesian-chinese, and a lot of mainland chinese around the stations.
not that there's anything wrong lah, especially if you consider the fact that a lot of these malaysian-chinese and mainland chinese girls, some of them chio until no words can describe, chio until no SG girl can ever hope to compare.
KNN......last time at outram park(where there's lots of chinese nationals), i saw his darn pretty girl who looks way prettier than Chiling Lin.....KNN.....such talent must retain; but ang-mohs......a bit ok lah, but if 5 out of 7 jobs go to these foreigners, then we become construction workers lah?! -

cost of living in SG goes higher.
more foreigners come to SG to become PRs.
they work for less, so they steal our jobs.
they enjoy ALL the benefits, but keep all their money.
after working hard for a few years, they go back to their country.
their money there is worth 2 - 5 times more as the cost of living there is lower.

Granting Singapore citizenship to low quality's foreigners is equal to degrading Singapore citizenship. Granting PR and Singapore citizenship to low quality's foreigners is also equal to degrading of Singapore's images and causing social problems. Imagine you have a rude neighbour who are foreigners living beside you, who donÂ’t know how conduct themselves, how would you feel?
