I am happy that the oppositions did farely well .
I have to agree with PM Lee that Singaporean who voted for opposition voted for their Party's calibre , and candidates calibre .
Nice to hear PM Lee praised the WP for doing such a good job this election .
On paper , PAP won , but fundamentally , they lost !
If opposition did come out with some better candidates like Miss Sylvia Lim , PAP might lose a few seats in the Parliament .
Take my word , more Professionals will join WP and they will sure to give PAP a run for their money in the 2011 elections .
This time they get 43% , then 46% , then 50% , then 54% .... it's a long run for opposition , but the people's voice will prevail .
Most Singaporean felt that we need more oppositions to keep a check on the PAP in the Parliament . Hope PM LEE is well aware of these .
Chiam ST said that after his win at P.Pasir , Singaporean still believe there must be more oppositions in the parliament , and i can't agree more . -

By itself, PUBLIC transport tells you that these things shouldn't be privatized. A country has 3 impt things, Education, Transport and Healthcare. These are the 3 pillars of a country's well-being, and in my opinion should not be outsourced to private companies (though it is all humbug in my opinion, since Temasek controls most of them anyway), and should not be made a profiteering tool
Let's take transport for example since you talk about bus fares. Public transport should remain affordable to the average Singaporean since this is the MUST-HAVE thing in the country. With public transport, rightfully there should be no profits out of it, coz it conflicts directly with the affordable objective.
Why the people are so upset with bus fares, etc, is coz private companies want to improve on their bottomline. By doing so, they raise prices. Now, this is in direct conflict with keeping public transport affordable. Here you are, the govt saying that must keep bus fares low, there you have, the private companies increasing their profits. This signals to the people that the bus fares aren't as low as what they should have been. -

hopefully by the next election, the opposition will be strong enough to contest all the 84 seats. instead of giving PAP walkovers, why not contest them. AMK is 1 good example, a bunch of newbies can get 30+% of the votes from PM's own GRC.

It surprises me that
1 in 3 residents in AMK want another PM
1 in 3 singaporeans want the opposition
1 in 2 residents in Aljunied want the opposition
But this is first world politics.....
where the opposition gets one-third of the votes and still has only two seats...
Just imagine what one-third would have translated into if it was 1963..all single seat competition....the poltical landscape will certainly be different -
I can see the dictatorship shivering in the their pants now. A 66% mandate for a new PM sounds like s.hit support to me. Anything less than 70% for thr PAP is NOT GOOD.
LSL will need the GCT and LKY to run the show for him. The people know he's inexperienced and rather hopeless.
Singaporeans have exercised their conscience well enough this time through their votes. Let's hope the next elections see the opposition improving.
The way CST thrashed the young crap in Potong Pasir was just fantastic! Oh yes, lest the PAP forget - don't think we're stupid enough to fall prey to your bloody lift upgrading s.hit-of-a-bait. Do you not know Singaporeans have more important things to worry about than that? What childish, immature grub. -

Opposition should only contest all seats when they are strong enough to run the next gov...which in the short run will not happen...
I shall not say its a beginning of the downfall of PAP, they have done fairly well for Singapore and should not deserve to lose in the mean time,
however it just prove that perhaps, our politic are moving towards 1st class?
and PPL want to see a truly 1st class democratic country?
Now, just hope next election WP will come back stronger and win 1-2 grc...
assumingly that they dun further the GRC to 10 - 12 members la...

You forget to mention those walkover consistuencies. If u include them, probably more than 1 in 3 favour the opp. We may never know because, as somebody had said, one day we may have a 84-men GRC. A national BIG WALKOVER...how about that for something first in first world politics ?? -
Sylvia Lim is the new NCMP
The Workers' Party has accepted the offer to take up the Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) seat in the next parliament
It has named chairman Sylvia Lim as its choice. The 41-year-old lecturer was part of the WP team that contested in Aljunied GRC in this year's General Election.
The others were Mr Goh Meng Seng, Mr James Gomez, Mr Mohd Rahizan Yaacob and Mr Tan Wui-Hua.
The team gathered nearly 44 percent of the valid votes, the best performing loser in the election.
The announcement of the choice for NCMP was made at a news conference after an hour-long meeting at the party headquarters in Syed Alwi Road on Tuesday night.
The Elections Department confirmed that it had written to the Workers' Party on Sunday asking it to name its NCMP.
Under the Parliamentary Elections Act, the NCMP offer would be extended to the team which polled the highest percentage of votes among the unsuccessful opposition candidates.
In this case, the Workers' Party team obtained the highest percentage of nearly 44 percent.
The law stipulates that the number of NCMP will be three, minus the number of Opposition MPs elected.
For this general election, since two Opposition MPs have been elected, there will only be one NCMP. - CNA/ir -
