Now that the topic of Ms. Lim taking the NCMP's post has come into the limelight, I was just wondering what is actually the difference between NCMP and other MPs apart from the fact that NCMP does not represent any constituency? Any significant difference?
Among other important things, does NCMP also get an MPs allowance?
Does an NCMP have the normal powers of an MP too? -
NCMP doesn't get to vote on constitutional issues among other things....
...which is really not much of a deal. With the PAP holding well over 2/3 of the seats in Parliment, they can change the Constitution as and when they like however they like. And they have done so often.
I remember there was once, i forgot which year, that LKY wanted to propose citizens above the age of 30 have 2 votes instead of 1.
Luckily it didn't happen.
Next month they pass a new Constitution law that says election once in 100 years everyone also lan lan suck thumb....
....and you all know whose fault is it? It will be Aljunied residents' fault!!! -

but she has the chance to voice in the parliment...
i think this will be a good experience for her...train her up in the parliment so tat pple will see her more prepared..den pple are more willing to vote her in next GE..
generally most voters agree there must be more opposition. but unless the opposition has good image n experienced, it will be hard to win over the conservative voters..
hope she works real hard...she has a bright future provided she doesnt make major mistake.. -

Think we need to differentiate between hypothesis and fact. We can hypothesise that PAP can do this and can do that with a majority in parliament. However, the fact bore out otherwise; as you have shown citing the 1 man 2 vote case. IF PAP is as you hypothesise, then LUCK has nothing to do with 1 man 2 vote NOT being implemented.
Stay cool, dude. Lay off Aljunied GRC residents, every Singaporean is entitle to vote as he/she deems fit. Respecting plurar views is essential component of political maturity.

Because she has no constituency...Aljunied is not won by her. Steve Chia was an NCMP, and that was a factor which got him the seven percentage points increase in the recent polls. If you factor this into Sylvia Lim's equation, 7 percentage points mean that she'll actually go neck and neck with her rivials. Of course, that figure is open to scrunity, given that Steve got himself embroided in a scandal and that he was running against a new candidate. However, being an NCMP allows u to be heard in parliment. Although your voice might just be symbolic, but it goes a long way in building a profile for urself amongst the voting public.

hmmm if the law say can oni nominate 3 NCMP hor if no opp are in parliment. then how come last time Enuice Olsen also NCMP???

I'm guessing here, but I guess that is a different category of NCMPs. If I'm not wrong, they only serve a term of 2 yrs.

The following is an extract from Wikipedia :
the rise of the SDP was not to be, as differences soon emerged in 1993 about what the party should do with Chee Soon Juan's hunger strike which happened after he was sacked from his university post when he was found to be misappropriating hundreds of dollars of research funds by the National University of Singapore (NUS). Chee Soon Juan claimed this was a political vendetta plotted by the ruling party (one of the PAP MPs is a NUS professor; Mr S.R. Vasoo)[citation needed]. The PAP has however denied the accusation and insisted the offense was real. Chiam See Tong urged Chee to stop the accusations and get back to real business. However, Chiam was not supported by most of the party and the Central Executive Committee voted to get rid of him as general secretary and replace him with Chee. Supporters of Chiam quickly left the party and formed the Singapore People's Party in 1994.
As if this was not enough, the party even decided to strip Chiam See Tong's membership in the party[citation needed]. Had he lost his membership, under the current law, he would also have to lose his seat in parliament. This invoked unhappiness among opposition supporters in Potong Pasir. Chiam took up this issue to the courts which ruled in favor of him as it was illegal to do so. Hence between 1993 and 1997, Chiam kept his seat in parliament officially as a SDP member. In the 1997 elections, he took over from Sin Kek Tong as the secretary-general (leader) of the Singapore People's Party.
