Violinist not allowed to defer NS

In today's newspaper, the violinist is not allowed to defer NS and his family is appealing. I find that Mindef is rigid and it is not often that we can get talented musicians who are accepted by prestigious Curtis.
I hope that Mindef can approve his deferment. All this gun handling in NS can blunt his skills in violin playing after two years. -
just run away then ... but he has to make sure he succeeds and become "world class" .... else he won't be able to get away with just a fine ...

They should practise some flexibility and do direct enlistment for him to MDC.

then how about the rest of the NSmen who went thru their tour of service?
our mind also become not as sharp after 2+ years and going back to our studies.We are also affected,but do you see all these people deferring?

Get a valuable violin cert than a worthless NS cert now!
He may be the first to wake up our leaders as to why our local talents are leaving us.

easy lar..chow keng all the way in army lor..fail ur ippt, fail ur range, fail ur soc...den they put u to those lousy vocations..den use the spare time to learn violin etc..

If you want to talk about equality, let's see some females do NS. Are they truly the weaker sex? They ask for equality in SG, then I say we give it to them. Females have the ability to outperform guys in every aspect, and increasingly, I see lesser reason why they should not serve. -

What so special about him that his parents expect him to get defer? Just serve his NS then go back to his violin studies......

You see, after the Melvyn Tan case and all the furore and controversy about National Service defaulters, the government is tightening the control over pre-enlistees and is now more stringent about granting pre enlistees deferment.
It is very unlikely that this violinist will be granted deferment for his studies in the USA and for that I tell you honestly I feel sorry for him. -
That boy is a rare talent indeed. Yet he should learn how to handle a weapon too like the rest of our guys. I believe Mindef will not be flexible enough because it want to avoid another public outcry. The US college is more likely to keep a place for the boy.
